We stayed 4 nights, availing the 10% discount, as published on their website. There was some back & forth with our dates, as we tried to plan our time in Italy. Lupaia was most prompt, gracious & accommodating, when we communicated via several emails.
We did get frightfully lost getting to the Hotel, inspite of printing their detailed instructions, taking a 20 minute journey to 60 minutes. Our first (& fatal) mistake was, after collecting our car from the Chiusi Train Station, to entirely miss the AI & the Chiusi / Chianciano Terme Exit. If you find that, I presume it would be hard to get lost thereafter, but do remember to print directions from the website. Lupaia is excellently located, close to both Pienza & Montepulciano (Fabulous Restaurants in the former & great Shopping in the latter). We also visited Montalcino & the Sant Antimo Abbey, 30mins away, which offered some dramatically different scenery, with its extensive vineyards & greenery. The most picture-worthy stretch, for us, was perhaps the road between Pienza & San Quirico, absolutely gorgeous! The 3km dirt road to Lupaia did bother us initially & would be quite difficult to navigate at night, but, by day, you get used it.
We had specifically requested for Room Turco & after some discussion on the availability, that was the room we got. WOW! Loved it, right from the time we walked in. You enter the room through an antechamber of sorts, which has a lounge bed (with tons of pretty cushions), a cupboard (with mini bar) and a small table. The main area of the Room was a fair size, dominated by a large, four poster bed (with lovely linen), two side tables, an armchair, a dressing area, a faux fireplace, a large window and a glass door to enter your own private garden area. We loved that the satellite TV, with Sky, offered a large selection of English channels. FYI the complimentary mini bar contains a few aerated drinks, water, some bottles of juice, peanuts, two types of sweet biscuits and a pack of crackers. The Bathroom, with its Turkish Hammam Bath, was huge! Cool stone floors, blue-green mosaic work on the walls, lots of fresh smelling bath linen, some interesting olive based bath products, plush bathrobes... just heaven! I was particularly impressed by how clean this room was, given that it was in the middle of the countryside, with so much whimsical fabric, multiple corners & baskets of dried flowers... quite commendable. Turco, perched on the edge of the property, offers perhaps the most incredible view in all of Lupaia, looking out at Montepulciano on the hillside, with the domed San Biagio Church at the base, and miles of golden brown countryside in between. We spent long hours just sitting in our private garden & gazing at the hills. When we return, we will request for Turco again or perhaps Suite Rossa, which is directly above Turco. Quiet, slightly cut away from the rest of the Hotel, with gorgeous views!
The Public Spaces were equally delightful. The outdoor dining area truly did resemble some kind of nymph grotto, with its pebbled floor, beautifully set tables and a 100 twinkling lights. The rustic, colourful indoor kitchen area, straight out of some Italian mama’s country home, the plush sofas, with a fireplace... all so charming. Then there was the lovely Pool (& Hot Tub) area, with brilliantly positioned hammocks, facing the valley & hills towards Montefollonico. And the flowering Gardens, with its many, many colours & the thoughtfully placed benches and other seating that afforded such fantastic views. We commend the skill & planning & obvious passion that has gone into creating such enchanting public areas, niches & rooms, with such fine, aesthetic taste. Bravo! We did read some of the other comments on the animals, but we love animals, so for us the dogs, multiple cats & horses actually added to the charm of the place.
Finally to the Staff, who really are at the heart of the place and have created an atmosphere that is intimate & warm, without ever being intrusive... Christine, so helpful & resourceful... you must take all the Maps & advice she offers. It’s a fantastic idea to keep so much information readily available, with brochures & maps, right at the Reception Desk (two thumbs up for all Touring Club Italia Maps). And Claudia & Franco, who we still speak of fondly, who manage to combine enthusiasm & professionalism & hard work to such a fine balance. Kudos, guys! You would be great assets to any Hotel anywhere!
We ate one Lunch, one Dinner & three Breakfasts on property, which now serves all meals; see their website for details on courses & costs. I could write a small sonnet just on the coolness & sweetness of the water they serve! The Lunch was good, a huge plate of meats & cheeses & some veggies, all very fresh. The Dinner, although served in a gorgeous setting, left a *lot* to be desired. Although I understand that palates vary, we were very disappointed. The Breakfasts were fabulous, all that home-made goodness oozing out of everything!
My only complaints would be a slightly temperamental shower in the Turco bathroom & the extremely poor meal we had on our first night. Would we return? That’s a rhetorical question, no?
