I have just returned from a few days in Venice staying at the Roberta. The hotel was fine.
I bought an ACTV 24 hour ticket for €15 at Marco Polo Airport and took the No.15 bus to Mestre railway station. The hotel is just 5 minutes walk from there.
I found the staff variable but all were polite.
The hotel décor is stylish and modern.
I had booked a single but was given a double at no extra cost presumably because of availability. The room was very clean and tidy. The lighting was good – 2 windows, 2 bedside lights and a main light. The room had air conditioning and a hot radiator which I turned off. The bed was very comfortable with nice plain white cotton sheets. There was a very small television on the wall at a height of about 2.5m. There were no English language programmes and judging by what I saw Italians have to put up with even more rubbish on TV than in the UK. As is usual there were no in-room tea/coffee facilities but I had a one cup emersion heater which worked fine in the shower room socket.
There was a safe in the room but I didn’t use it. The en suite shower room was very smart and clean. There was a good shower and also a bidet. Towels, soap, shampoo &etc. were replaced each day.
Breakfast was fairly typical with rolls toast, croissant, cereal, yoghurts, fruit juice (diluted) and various coffees.
There was no tourist information at the hotel and no Hotel information in the Information folder in the room but this could have been because of the time of year. I didn’t find this lack of provision a problem.
The area around the hotel was equivalent to the Gloucester Road in Bristol if you know it or like many mixed urban, cosmopolitan shopping areas in the UK. There were quite a lot of people hanging around but this seems fairly normal in many European towns and I didn’t feel at all threatened. There is a good take away (or sit down) pizza place just right into V.Piave and 3 minutes up on the left-hand side. There is a supermarket (Co-op) at 84, V. Monte Nero. The tobacconist at the bottom of V.Piave on the left hand side sells ACTV Tourist transport tickets. The No. 2 from outside the railway station goes to the Venice bus station at Piazzale Roma.
My tip for Venice is don’t rely on official tourist information - there is always a very long wait at the bureau at Venice railway station (only one person allowed in at a time) and there are no transport maps at the vaporetto stops.
Generally I would recommend the hotel as good value for money (the equivalent in the UK would probably be at least €100 a night compared to the €49 I payed at the Roberta) and would certainly stay again myself.
