I planned 2 nights in Menaggio for my recent honeymoon, but the hotel I booked online turned out to be closed for the season. Luckily, when my husband & I finally stumbled upon Menaggio "centrale" and the Hotel du Lac, it turned out to be open -- and to have an absolutely lovely room available for us!

I had read the reviews here before booking at the other hotel, of course, but was dismayed by the Hotel du Lac's online booking page's request for a (non-secured) credit card number. I really wish I had just written the hotel directly instead!

Upon our coming in to the charming "caffe" (despite all the wonderful food -- as well as a full bar -- we were humbly told by a manager that they didn't consider it to be a full-fledged "restaurant") and dispiritedly asking if there were any rooms to let, we were shown no fewer than THREE available rooms! We chose one with a view of one of the main squares in the town ("Piazza Garibaldi"), which had a beautiful Christmas tree up for the season, as well as a gorgeous view of the lake.

The location is absolutely perfect for wandering around the town or venturing down to the nearby ferry for a trip to the other scenic sites around Lake Como, and you absolutely can't ask for a better view to go with the included breakfast! And, my goodness, every single member of the staff -- as well as the locals at the caffe -- are just the most charming and gracious. For our honeymoon, this was our most cost-efficient stop at around 145 Euro per night.

Oh! And they have an INCREDIBLE wealth of multi-language TV channels!

This is a charming old building that has been recently renovated. It is situated right on the edge of the lake in the main square, so it is really handy to all amenities. The views from our room where quite lovely, we had heard that noise from the restaurant below could be a problem but it was no issue for us. The rooms were spacious, clean and well appointed, the ensuite bathroom was equally impressive. The staff was mostly not to be seen unless one looked for them in the restaurant, when they were certainly helpful enough.

Having vowed never to try a 3 star Italian hotel again after a terrible experience in Firenze , we reconsidered and picked this hotel as it had good TA reviews and this was to be a budget extra holiday.
What a brilliant place to stay!
We had room 309 which shares its balcony with the roof top terrace..to have breakfast on this terrace with the sun shining was bliss. As the hotel juts out slightly in the bay , we had great views of the old harbour , ferry terminal,the square and the promenade. At the end of a busy day , i could sit for hours on this terrace watching the world go by. Surprisingly hardly anyone came to this terrace.
All the furnishings in the hotel belie its lowly 3star rating. The lift for example is classy glass and dark wood. Our bedroom also felt classy with nicely varnished exposed roof beams. Free safe also a bonus.
In essence it is a cafe/bar with bedrooms so it might not be ideal for a longer break.
If we return to Menaggio we would definitely come back to this hotel.

Delightful hotel to complete our wonderful Italian holiday. Lovely hotel with old world charm ,terrific beds, great views in a spectacular location. Delicious breakfast.
