“Nice hotel with... works!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2010

Nice hotel in a splendid location, above the sea, quiet place if not considering works that were undertaken in the hotel while guests were staying there! On the 2nd day (we stayed a whole week there) in the morning we got awaken by a drilling hammer! The worse was not the works themselves but the way the lady at the entrance desk treated our complaint: she started by saying there were no works (!) and that even in another room guests may hear the desk's phone ringing... She took us for fools and was so unfriendly, but we finally agreed to be moved to another room (that wasn't clean by the way).
We had diner there every night, the food was ok but not great for Italy and the service reduced to minimum (not kind at all). Breakfast buffet was mediocre.
The Jacuzzi was not working and looked neglected.

“A magical place on the Gargano”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2010

Visited this place in August for a 5 night stay with my 8 year old son. Everything was perfect! It is truly a stunning location. The staff was very nice and the food was very good, as we took half board package. There is a beach 200 m away, but there was no need to leave as we spent our time around the pool. We also took the 200 steps down from the pool to the Adriatic and floated around. The hotel arranged a boat for us to tour the sea caves and that was a very nice excursion. I would definitely stay here again!

“Stunning location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2010

We stayed at Villa Scapone on the Gargano peninsula in late July 2010 for a week. The hotel is recommended in the Lonely Planet Italy guide, but interestingly not in the Lonely Planet guide for Puglia. We were also a bit concerned since the last Tripadvisor reviews were from 2009. In any case, we liked the hotel, which is perched on a cliff above the turquoise sea. The hotel was pretty empty (maybe since it is quite expensive), so we were shown several rooms and picked one in the main building. The room had a huge terrace with sea view and included two lounge chairs and a hammock; the other rooms we saw (in bungalows a bit further down) did not have such spacious outdoor areas nor a hammock. Our room was comfortable, including the bed, although the ceiling light did not instill a nice atmosphere; we avoided using it. The bathroom was clean, but the water from the tap was rusty at times. Breakfast was delicious, with ample selection, and served in the hotel restaurant overlooking the sea. On several nights, we ate at the hotel restaurant's charming outdoor area. The quality of the food varied a lot, and the waiter's limited knowledge of English (or our limited mastering of Italian) made it difficult at times to come up with the right choice. Internet connectivity is slow, both at the hotel computer or WIFI. We never used the hotel pool, but walked down the stairs to swim in the crystal clear sea once. Otherwise, we tried out several of the gorgeous beaches on the peninsula, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We also recommend excursions to Vieste, Peschici, and beautiful Trani, as well as to the nearby pilgrimage sites (San Giovanni Rotondo and Monte Sant' Angelo). Overall, Villa Scapone is a great base for exploring the Gargano pensinsula and enjoying its beauty.

“Perfect Location and good philosophy”

I spent one night there by complete chance, and found a very welcoming place, an incredible location on the cliffs, and very amiable staff.
The hotel is actually a small main building, and a series of bungalows scattered on the cliffs, very well integrated in the landscape. Rooms are simple but clean and spatious. What you see around you is just stunning beauty. Prices are very reasonable for this quality.
The owner is a hands-on guy, who wants to keep this hotel small, family oriented and not directed towards mass tourism. He seemed to be truly concerned with how his hotel, and tourism in general, can be managed in a way that does not perturb the natural beauty and the soul of the place. I had a couple of very interesting conversations with him about Apulian cousine, local fish, sustainability....
He really did not strike me a s a greedy person, rather someone with a set of values that is very rarely found in this business.
I now own a place in Mattinata, yet I stop by this hotel at times, for a drink on the terrace with a stunning view on the sea, a dinner, or a tennis game after a snack at the bar.
I love this region, its food, its shy beauty, and in the few weeks per year I spend here I strive to give some sort of contribution, volunteering to clean beaches, to do some work in the national park etc.....I was extremely happy to find this place, and hope that tourism developments will follow this example.
So, giving a very positive review here. The only detail that I´d like to mention: this is not a place for a family who would just like a large, sandy beach, 20 meters from your hotel room, and tourist shopping and nightlife. Cliffs, and a marvellous set of (pebble) beaches are easily reachable from the hotel. If you are looking for packed, sandy beaches, nightlife etc, go further north along the coast.
But otherwise I find it difficult to imagine that this place can disappoint.

“A Hidden Gem! We could not have wished for more.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2009

We stayed in this lovely hotel which was, until not very long ago, a private villa perched on the cliffside below the coast road and above the shore. We were there for just one night at the end of September when on a walking holiday. Our room in the main house was very comfortable with a spacious bathroom and very large verandah overlooking the Adriatic Sea complete with sunbeds and even a hammock.
The Dining Room is in a wonderful setting with spectacular views looking out over the sea, They run an excellent kitchen and their wine cellar offers an exceptional list of the Apulian wine as well as those from wineries of the neighbouring wine regions. The food is of Mediterranean cuisine with fresh sea produce and other international dishes.
There is a large swimming pool (and a hydro-massage pool) and the real joy for us was swimming in the sea involving no pebbly beach. There is a short ladder straight into the sea. This does entail walking down quite a few steps to reach the water but it is well worth the walk down and walk back up. For those less fit they have been very thoughtful by placing sunbeds in strategic places enabling you to sunbathe en route!
There is also a solarium and tennis court.
This is very much a family run hotel and full of charm. Our host could not have been more helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Our only complaint was that we were not there long enough. We would definitely like to return.
