“Absolutely hated it”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2008

We booked the top apartment (Grecale) months before the review appeared from "Bioexpert Boston". When I read it (with horror) I felt this person was being accurate in their assessement but was hoping desperately that the review was exaggerated. Sadly, our experience was almost identical to theirs.

The Good:
The apartment was clean
The view was beautiful from the terrace-as long one stayed away from the edge where all the campers and tents were nestled up against the tower.

The Bad:
The stairs are ridiculously steep. Try hauling suitcases up and down.
The apartment was a small sad place-shabby couch, generic oak furniture, lumpy bed, lightbulbs burned out, and then 2 huge uncovered spotlights in the kitchen. No attempt at making the place pleasant or attractive.
It smelled of bathroom plumbing in the kitchen.
The air conditioner barely worked. We complained but they never fixed it.
The satellite tv never worked. We complained and they never fixed it.
Our apartment was never cleaned, towels only changed on day 4. They only made the bed and removed the garbage.
The terrace had old faded stained chairs and an awning that was falling apart.
The pictures on thier website must have been taken 30 years ago.

The Ugly
The tower is a ridiculous structure set in the middle of trailors, tents, and tacky little bungalows. They are everywhere and there is no privacy.
The noise level was unacceptable: when we were there the entire place was filled with18 year old German students. The management obviously caters to them because they have a disco and a bar opened until midnight. Between the loud music, and the drunken singing teenagers, we were unable to sleep. They even moved a table and chairs directly below us and continued partying one night. This went on for 3 nights. When we complained to the manager Micheal, he reacted with anger and was very aggressive. He pulled out a map and demanded that we show him which bungalow/tent the noise was coming from. We left in anger.
Five minutes later an emploee, Tina hauled herself up the stairs and gave us a bottle of cheap wine as an apology. Pathetic.

In sum, this place is terrribly overrated, misrepresented and over priced for what it is. I was so disappointed the entire stay and angry at myself for falling for their marketing ploy. The noise was so bad I couldn't sleep and I felt ill in the mornings. No privacy and everywhere you look-tacky little colored bungalows and trailors. A total rip off. Please avoid this place at all costs.

“Torre Turbolo Is Not Worth the Price! Caveat Emptor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 April 2008

We would never stay here again. Caveat Emptor. Bottom line: the management oversold the facilities and underdelivered when the rooms had problems. Worse, they had "bad math" when it came time to pay the bill and overcharged us by $600 Euros until we caught it, so be careful.

I rented all four rooms of the Torre Turbolo Roman / Saracen tower hotel from the Villaggio Nettuno based on the website and discussions with their management.

We planned a family reunion there with kids and grandparents. We loved the Massa Lubrense area and vacationed there before. The village of Marina del Cantone is lovely and has a number of good restaurants and attractions.

However, Torre Turbolo was really disappointing given how expensive it was and the awful owner and management. Salt in the wound was when we discovered that we could have stayed in the brand new Spa Resort in Marina del Cantone in beautiful rooms and had daily massages for less than the tower cost.

While this would be an OK place to camp on Amalfi, don't rent their shelters! Don't get wooed by the romantic notion of sleeping in a Roman tower.

BEWARE THEIR WEBSITE MARKETING:
- "Private ways to the beach" not private beach as they said on the phone. We booked in Italian, so there were no translation issues.

- The Tower seems remote, but upon arriving it is completely surrounded by campers and trailers, so the view is not as it seems on the web. This is especially an issue on the bottom Scirocco "garden" unit, since it's completely surrounded by campers with no privacy and no grass like in the pictures.

- Smaller top unit gets really hot during the day. Low wall made us nervous with young kids. Level with Nettuno "Resort" night bad american disco music and skits, so plan to be awake until 1am.

PROBLEMS:
- When negotiating a price, get it all down in writing via email before coming to stay
- Air conditioning in Libeccio failed repeatedly and they were not able to fix - and the rooms get hot and say hot if you can't get AC in July/August. The electrician said the place was just not wired right.
- Smelly bathrooms and awful water pressure for as expensive place as this is
- Stove/oven didn't work in Maestrale apartment
- Dirty beach but when it's clean, it's beautiful
- Mediocre restaurant, but there are great ones in town a short walk away. The pizza was good, though.
- If you rent the bungalows, just know that they have really bad entertainment until about midnight which kids like, but it's really loud, even from the tower, but would have been unbearable from the bungalows.
- Our kids were not allowed to play soccer in the campground near the tower, since so many tents were there.
- They tried to charge us $300 Euros for a basic portable crib.
- It's loud at night with all the campers and music, so small kids may have trouble getting to sleep.
- Washing clothes does not include drying, so you get handed a sack of wet towels/clothes not even wrung dry.
- They claim internet service, but they had none for 7 of the 14 days we were there and sporadic for the rest. Plus, it's pretty expensive and slow. Drive up to the city and get free fast wifi.

Ciao, Z
