The very helpful young lass at the tourist centre in the middle of Malcesine booked us in to the Orchidea after we told her we preferred staying out of town - it gives us some exercise to wander into the town center at night for a meal. The Orchidea is a couple of km from the centre, and we were warmly welcomed by the host and shown to a gorgeous modern room with a large bathroom and a view overlooking olive groves to the lake and mountains beyond.
Our host booked us a table at his favourite restaurant and we walked the half-hour into town. It started raining as we were dining (the only rain we had in 3 weeks!) so we took a taxi back to the hotel. The driver gave us his card but I told him we had to leave "domani". "Next year!" he said. We asked our host if we could get a couple of glasses of wine to take to our room. He had an open bottle of prosecco on hand - "New Zealand! You take it for free!". How could we refuse!
Breakfast next morning in the clean, open-plan dining area was fresh and delicious. All in all, a lovely stay.
