“Fantastic Hotel”

My wife and I have recently returned from an excellent stay at the hotel.I would strongly recommend it and in particular the food, helpful staff and overall comfort.
As other people have said,it is located some 30 minutes from the centre of Malcesine, but don't let this put you off.The walk is very enjoyable and bus service reliable. We had a room with a balcony which was well worth the extra charge. You will not be disappointed.

“Excellent food!, if it could only be closer to Malcesine...”

We have just returned from a week spent in the Maximillan and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel, but particularly the hotel restaurant where the food was excellent! Now, I'll admit to being very fussy, not just about hotels but restaurants and food in particular. So, for me to eat every night in the hotel restaurant really says something. This is the first time we had gone half board (only option available to us) and it was very worthwhile. Rooms were fine, nothing to get terribly excited about, but a good standard none the less.
When we were there the temperature was just a bit too high for us (early 30s) hence the comment about it being a pity that it wasn't closer to the town, as it was just too warm & humid to take the 30 minute walk each day.
Would we recommend the Maximilian? Yes!

“comfortable room and excellent restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

We stayed here one night. The room was basic but clean and comfortable. The air con was great as it was really hot when we stayed. We had booked a room with a balcony and we were pleasantly surprised at how big it was and that although we weren't right on the lake shore, we could see the lake and the sunset. I didn't see the other room types but think we would've been disappointed if it han't been for the balcony.
We ate at the restaurant below and it was the best food we had while in Italy (compared to Venice). the portions were large, delcious and affordable, and the restaurant was busy with many locals arriving throughout the night.
Breakfast was ok, bread, jam, some fruit but could've been better.
Overall we enjoyed our stay here and coul've stayed longer. I think we would stop here again, the only things that let this place down was the traffic noise throughout the night and the price (it was the most expensive place we stayed in a trip around Italy, Germany and Austria) however I think the prices are the same in this area so it probably compares to these quite well!

Room Tip: get a room with a balcony - it is well worth the little bit extra

“Best hotel we have stayed in”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

We arrived on 13 August 2011. Our room on the first floor had a fantastic view of the lake and hotel pool and gardens. It couldn't be better. Room very nice and clean with lovely bathroom. All staff very friendly and food excellent. You really couldn't pick a better hotel in a better location. About half an hours walk along the lakeside into Malcesine which is lovely with lots of shops and restaurants. We have stayed in many hotels and this is definitely the nicest. We hope to come back soon.

Room Tip: We paid extra for a lakeside superior room and asked for an upper floor.

“Beware of this Hotel if you stay in the annexe”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

We are a couple in our late sixties and have widely travelled all over the world for the past 40 years and this hotel is the worst 4 star hotel we have experienced.

This holiday was to celebrate our 45th Wedding Anniversary hopefully in a lovely hotel (the most expensive for this resort in the Inghams brochure) with a view of the Lake and a visit to the Opera in Verona on our anniversary. We had paid a supplement for a lake facing room and made a special request for an upper floor and balcony.

On our arrival (Wednesday 3 August) we were shown to a ground floor room in an annexe (Chalet Cristina) adjacent to an access road to other hotel accommodation. This was used by guests and staffs either walking to and from the main building or driving to park adjacent to their accommodation. The sliding doors to our room did not have any voile/net curtains to screen and the only way to achieve any privacy at times from the access road was by keeping the heavy curtains pulled-to thus blocking out natural light. In addition as the doors were the only means of natural ventilation we could not keep them open at night whilst sleeping to ensure our safety and security.

This ground floor room had a very good view of the access road together with the garden but it does not have a view of the lake although it was of course lake facing I would cynically point out. In this annexe you only have a view of the lake from the first floor rooms.

After some discussion the hotel receptionist spoke to some other guests being shown to rooms above ours. Their teenage children had been allocated a room adjacent to the parents but were happy to swap with the G F room allocated to us. We reluctantly agreed to accept what was a sub-standard room in all respects except it had a balcony (I am an asthmatic and need natural ventilation especially at night). This was on the understanding that the hotel would move us to a better room on Saturday 6th. This room just about made 2 star status as follows: -

Had only one armchair with a collapsed seat.
One straight back chair
Bare walls.
Lamp shades covered with mildew.
Shower valve defective - the handle came off and had to be held on with one hand whilst you washed with the other.
Shower head damaged
Shaving mirror bent.
Although I always take mine own there was not a box of tissues in the bathroom which you usually associate with 4 star hotels.

On Friday 5 August Inghams resort manager advised us the room that had been offered for the 6th August - our Anniversary - would not now be available with no explanation and if we were unhappy to take it up with the Director of the Hotel.

My husband did approach the director as suggested but he told him he had little English and to speak with the receptionist he did not ask her to translate the conversation for him. She just shrugged and said there was nothing she could do.

We had asked the hotel to replace the damaged armchair on our first day and to provide a second. The handy- man padded the collapsed armchair which collapsed again, you thought you would fall through it every time you sat in it (neither of us are overweight as we are keen walkers) The hotel finally provided a second tatty armchair the quality of which you might find in a down market second hand shop on the third day of our stay.

On a final note I do have to say that the junior staff from our room maid to the waiters and one or two of the receptionists were helpful and pleasant. If you do decide to stay make sure you are getting a room in the main building which we understand are of a good standard.
