We stayed at the Montana in March 2011. We were both novice skiers having skied for 6 days in France in January 2011. Skiing in Madonna and staying at the Montana proved to be a perfect combination and one we will repeat in 2012.
Madonna is large and attractive with many excellent places to sit, eat and watch the world go by. It has a superb location with wonderful views and offers activities other than skiing. Try snow shoeing to the igloo and while there eat delicious chocolate torte and drink coffee and grappa.
The Montana offers B&B. We had a spacious room with a Jacuzzi bath. Our balcony looked to the piste that brought you back to the hotel and the boot room. Perfect. The hotel provided free WiFi. The Public areas and Wellness Centre were attractive and spotlessly clean. However the greatest asset the Montana has is the couple, Rosetta and Lorenzo ,who run the Hotel. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome. They were always on hand to keep the excellent breakfast topped up, provide information and make recommendations. The Montana discount card works. The card was accepted in all the shops, restaurants and sports shops that we used. Not only did we save money on the ski hire but Lorenzo collected the skis for us and when we left he returned them for us. One of the main ski lifts is 5 mins walking from the Montana or you can ski there if you just can’t walk in those strange boots! The lifts take you high very quickly and then you simply enjoy the long sweeping descents that go on and on. At the top again and this time you can choose the hot chocolate, snack or full meal.
Both Rosetta and Lorenzo are ski instructors. Rosetta taught us to enjoy skiing. Skiing “is like music” – “let it go” Rosetta would say. She was always encouraging and patient and knew when to push us and get the best out of us. She explained things and demonstrated and let us get things right before pushing on to steeper slopes. Our experience in France was that speed alone seemed to be all the instructor wanted. During the week we went from skiing blue runs to red and eventually to black on the last day. Wow, not only did we do it but we enjoyed it.
Each day we did various activities to develop our skills. Theses usually ended in peels of laughter because I in particular just can’t do the co-ordinated thing. Instead of getting cross Rosetta would laugh too and shout Sharon “forget it we will do something else” and we did. We ended every day looking forward to the next.
To return to the Rosetta Lorenzo team, there aren’t many proprietors who will buy you a coffee and come and pick you up from the other side of the village when you are struggling with your skis and ski boots and feeling a little fragile and then refuse payment.
We will go back to the Montana next season and we hope that Rosetta will be our instructor again. We will also go back to ski in Modonna di Campiglio because of the quality of the views, town, restaurants, fast easy ski lifts and runs of several kilometres that suit intermediate skiers so well. Having said that check out the resort because I think they are adding a more challenging runs next season.
