Hello – my review of the Tritone Hotel in Lipari seems to have been lost in transit, so here is a recap:
A real gem
The Tritone Hotel on the island of Lipari was one of the lodging highlights in our week-long tour of Sicily. It looked as if recently refurbished. Based high on a hill so that the view around was beautiful, with the sea and the rocks (no real sand except an imported beach) and the mountains, one could not fault Nature. Comfortable wide beds, spacious rooms, very attentive and polite staff, all smoothly organized. Lifts that worked, a really good breakfast, and if you did have a gripe, it was the TV that spoke only Italian. Another small lacuna was one common to many Sicilian hotels: reception was one floor up and there was no lift if you came by bus or taxi (private cars could apparently drive into the parking place and from there go by special lift to the reception floor). The storm that brewed over the islands made our stay even more spectacular: from inside the large picture windows we could see in the evening where lightning hit and the next day the huge breakers hitting the shore. It was no storm to trifle with, as many roads became impassable and we had to take several detours on our way back to the harbor. Normal ferries were suspended and we had to wait for a huge boat plying the Napoli –Palermo route to pick us up. But in general – if you do go to Sicily, don't miss Lipari, or the Aeolian islands in general.
