Should have paid closer attention to the negative reviews because that was certainly our experience. My husband and I spend alot of time in Italy each year and I speak fluent Italian. The treatment we received here still has us baffled. We try to avoid beaches in summer in Italy, knowing how crowded and noisy they are. We booked this knowing it would be somewhat busy but never imagined the noise level that we would experience at this hotel, especially that it is located a busy bus stop, there is no air condtioning and is on the only road going through the town. I was thankful I had thought to bring earplugs. In addtion, the idea that the rooms have balconies is a joke. There is barely room for one very small child.
I cannot say we received a poor reception or welcome as we received NO reception whatsoever. We were basically ignored, despite the fact that the place was very low on guests. We were hard pressed to request a bottle of water or ask a question since no one was around except for the father who held some sort of business meeting in the only lobby area of the place. The only attention we received was when the son decided to give us an Italian Tuscan history lesson during our breakfast. I felt his intrusion during our breakfast to be most inappropriate, especially since he never even registered in or spoke to us before then.
We had dinner here two nights. The first night the "chef's menu" was terrific. The next night it appeared to be leftover from the first night and it was basically awful.
Breakfast is not served until nine a.m. and for those of use who are early risers, it was a long walk into the center of town for that first cup of coffee. In addition, no one bothered to let us know that the stairwell would be gated and locked until the owners got there in the morning. We were not pleased to discover that we had been locked in and were expected to know to use the back entrance to leave the hotel.
We loved the area of Tellaro, Portovenere, Lerici and enjoyed our time seeing the sights, taking boat rides, etc. but I must say that this hotel did absolutely nothing to contribute to our nice holiday. We were supporse to stay for four nights but ended up leaving a day early. We cherish our weeks in Italy every year and wouldn't waste another night in place where we felt most unwecome, save for one friendly waiter.
