After staying at another hotel nearby that we were less than impressed with, we moved to the Nido dell L'Aquila and stayed for 3 nights. Being mountaineers, we were looking for a good value hotel near the cable car up to Campo Imperatore. This hotel, situated a short drive from the cable car was only fractionally more expensive than the previous one we had stayed in down the road. But it possessed much more charm with its wooden facade (rather like a mountain lodge), quiet sylvan setting, and imaginately decorated and comfortable interior. There was ample parking outside and a small swimming pool and sunbathing area, which I imagine would be very welcome in the summer heat.
Our ensuite room was quiet although we did not enjoy the best of views the hotel offered from our window that was on the side of the building, but it was spotlessly clean, warm and comfortable with a fridge and internet connection. The bathroom was well appointed and the shower had good water pressure and plenty of hot water, vital after a long day spent climbing.
The management were very friendly and spoke good English. We did not eat an evening meal here, opting instead to drive to a small restaurant we had discovered in nearby Assergi. Our only criticism was the rather spartan breakfast. This consisted of a limited selection of cakes with coffee, which we felt fell well short of the choice we have enjoyed in other hotels during previous stays in Italy and did not provide the start to the day required by those engaged in winter sports.
