Thankfully we were only committed to staying for two nights in this overpriced hotel that inexplicably has a 4 star rating. We booked this hotel because it was described as having the following facilities: “The hotel is ideally equipped for health care and relaxation. The hotel’s fitness center offers the best solution for health care and relaxation, equipped with 5 tennis courts, open-air swimming pool (12x25 mt.), park, indoor swimming pool (open in low season only), gym, sauna, underwater massage pools and a solarium.” This description is laughable. The hotel does indeed have tennis courts and an outdoor pool. And that’s about it. None of the other facilities were available during our stay – we eventually found the signs to the gym and sauna etc. in a basement area near the entrance to the garage. The basement was drab and grotty, and these facilities were clearly not in use.
The hotel was probably built in the 1970s, and is now extremely tired and faded. Thankfully our room looked towards the hills around Lake Garda, and was not on top of the restaurant/kitchen block or overlooking the road. We had booked a double room but got twin beds. From what I could see of other rooms around us, it appears that there are no double beds available. The bathroom was basic but fine. However, on the first morning of our stay the cleaner burst into our room at 8.20am to clean the room, and again about 25 minutes later. So much for a holiday lie-in. There are no “do not disturb” signs, so that night we wedged a chair against our door to prevent the same thing happening the following morning.
Breakfast (served from 7.30-9.30am) was not a pleasant experience. On entering the dining room (hideous décor) the majority of tables were already reserved, presumably for those lucky people doomed to stay at the hotel for the whole of their package holiday. When we eventually found a table, we were begrudgingly offered coffee, which turned out to be virtually undrinkable – even my husband who loves strong Italian coffee struggled to drink the sludge we were given. The food itself was remarkably average. On the second (and thankfully last!) morning of our stay we arrived for breakfast at 9.20am. This turned out to be a no-no. At precisely 9.35am a curtain was pulled across the doorway leading towards the breakfast buffet, and the lights were switched off in the dining room. This was despite the fact that there were many people still in the dining room eating their breakfast, obtained from the buffet before it was closed down. Not exactly a relaxing and leisurely breakfast experience.
Garda town is about a 5-10 minute walk down a steep road from the hotel, and the walk back up the hill to the hotel will be challenging for some people. I would use this hotel only as a base for exploring Lake Garda, which is absolutely lovely. We certainly did not want to spend any more time than absolutely necessary in the hotel itself.
