“Was I in a different Hotel?”

My husband took me on a a Newmarket Holiday in Oct 2008. We stayed at the Alfieri. There was one included trip the rest were extra, this made a reasonably priced holiday quite expensive. Every day there was a trip you had to get up at about 5.30am - not my idea of holiday. The hotel is old and dated, the breakfasts were the worst I have ever experienced in my life, and yet this did not stop people "stealing" the food to make up a lunch leaving nothing for the people who arrived for breakfast a little bit later. Ria and Fabio (Laurel and Hardy) tried hard but they couldn't control 3 bus loads of people. The first trip which was free they asked for the disabled to come forward first, this filled a bus and a half. Some of these people should not have been on such a trip. The hotel was old and dated. The town of Fiuggi (what we seen of it most tours not over till 8pm) was nothing to write home about. The hotel is hours away from the airport. Can I say anything good, no, sorry. Would never do this type of tour again. Also Ria should keep her opinions to herself when talking of the War Dead at Monte Casino - which lasted all of 15 mins. My husband and I are army medics and were greatly offended by her comments. Consider if you are over 70, never had a good meal in your life, like to spend all your time on a bus with Laurel or Hardy - well Fabio is slighly better.

“A pleasant hotel with a few surprise treats”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2009

Owned and run by Fabrizzio and Sabrina, a husband and wife team and their staff - notably Mirco and Valeria, who they treat like family - it's not as typical as you may expect.

The Alfieri is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac away from the main part of the new town, but I was there before the main season, so everywhere was peaceful. Although it is close to a church with bells. Most of the rooms have been recently refurbished with bright new bathrooms and homely soft furnishings. More work seems to be underway as some fittings are looking dated. The restaurant provides well for evening meals, stick to the italian choices and you won't be disappointed. Mirco puts on a one-man-show of singing and dancing a couple of evenings a week.

The real treat is the spa - isolated from the outside world: music, aromas and soft light combine and time can pass very easily in this space. There is a multi-function jacuzzi, steam room and a menthol shower as well as the option to have a cleansing massage.

The staff can help you out with finding a restaurant - the eatery near the top of the road that leads to the hotel is convenient and affordable but the best places seem to be away from the town - the traditional italian country restaurant instead of the few touristy ones.

A trip up to the old part of the town is rewarding - it's on top of the hill and commands dramatic open views over the mountains and thermal springs region, combining that with the nooks and alleys between the traditional architecture.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2009

i went to italy with my mam on 11th of june 2008
it was fantastic! i was the only one of my age there ( 14 )
and everyone was very kind and friendly to me.
although we stayed in terminus, hotel alfieri was equally fanastic!
especially when we went to see Mirco...the singer
he was great at singing and also very friendly too!
Fabio and ria were the tour managers and were very, very kind!
it was so fantastic that me and my mam are going back
june 2010!!!!
i would reccomend this holiday as you can learn ALOT from its history and was very helpful in geography when it came to learning about pompeii, vesuvius and Rome!!! :-D
overall, it was the best holiday i have ever been on!

  • Liked — the singer mirco! :-)...the history, friendly people, Rome, shopping, EVERYTHING!

“Nice Hotel- shame about location.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2008

Myself & my husband booked through Newmarket Travel for a 5 day break with 2 tours pre booked to Sorento & Rome.

In our opinion, the first shock came when we were travelling to our hotel on the coach, and was informed that the very next morning was the first tour. Please note we arrived at the hotel in the evening & the tour the next morning was starting at 06.30!!
We were expected to have breakfast before then, and the majority of fellow passengers were not amused.

We were pleased with the actual hotel, it was really pleasant & had a friendly atmosphere. Our room was nicely furnished but slightly dark. The bathroom was very nice.

We were given a wake up call of 5.30am ready to start our first excursion to Sorento/Pompei. Once again the majority of guests did not realise that Sorento was actually 3.5 hours each way! We were hoping that the hotel location would be nearer to the tours on this trip.
Sorento was very pretty but of no places to visit of interest, just shops.
Onto Pompei next which was very interesting but we were not given enough time there.
Then back onto the coach for the 3.5hour journey back to the hotel.
Back at 8.30pm.

The restaurant next to the hotel (pizza) is very overpriced and the service is very second rate at times, in our opinion.

Dinner in the hotel was excellent & could not be faulted. 5 courses for 20euros each.

Breakfast in the hotel was fine but repetitive. Cornflakes, variety of bread & cakes, hard boiled eggs, jams, butter, croissants, tea & coffee, ham & cheese (plastic style!).

The 2nd day was another early start (7.30am)! It was Rome/Vatican.
The journey was ok, an hour. We were disapointed that we could not visit the Colesseum up close as we were not given enough time or the opportunity.

The rest of the tour was all in the coach, being pointed out to us. The Vatican was awsome, plenty of time to view that.

We did not go on any other tours simply due to the fact of the terrible early morning starts and them being so close together. We were definatley not alone on this view!

Over all we found Italy expensive (a pint of beer £5 plus). We are glad we saw Rome & Pompei but once was enough doing it this way!

“Lovely Hotel and Very Good Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2008

Just returned from a holiday to Fiuggi with Newmarket Travel touring southern Italy, including Pompeii, Sorento, Capri, Rome, Castella Romani. My sister and I had a wonderful holiday. The hotel and resort were wonderful, excellent local food and the people were very friendly. Most of the local shops/restaurants can understand english. The hotel has a spa in the basement which is well worth a visit - on our last day we spent the morning alternating betweenthe steam room, jaccuzi spa bath, and "emotional" shower, and just being totally pampered. The hotel breakfast was very nice, with a large selection to chose from. The evening meals did not appeal to us and we were glad that we had not added this on as the local restaurants were very reasonable and had a large selection of piza and pasta. The holiday reps, Fabio and Ria, were excellent and well organised - they never lost a person whilst touring! Although the card system seemed strange at first, it does make managing the tours easy and we had no problems. I would recommend both the hotel and Newmarket Travel if anyone is wanting to visit this area.
