“So enjoyable we have already booked again for next year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2009

We stayed at this hotel yet again in July - for the 14th consecutive year so we thought it was time to share it with others! We have been coming since it was a two-star without a lift, and watched it blossom into a friendly, family hotel. It is what the Italians would call molto simpatico.

In fact we love the place so much we asked it to host our reception when we married in the town (see picture). In the summer we watch the fun on the beaches from our balcony, and during trips in the winter we put on our coats to sit out there to watch the sea while eating fish and chips bought from the local market (every Thursday, watch out for it!).

In the restaurant you get the chance to try out local Ligurian dishes you would probably never dare to order in the town. The chef has his secret recipes and is happy as long as you're happy. The waiting staff are friendly and will always try to help you work out exactly what kind of fish it is they are serving.

Before we discovered the Medusa we did try other hotels in Finale Ligure but none could compete for friendliness, comfort, views and generally causing a feeling of well-being.

“Old, badly kept, expensive hotel, no value for money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2009

We fortunately spent only one night in this hotel in July and we were happy to leave. The hotel was the worst, most expensive, most unconfortable one we had during our two weeks trip in Italy and Sardinia.
Main negative aspects:
- hotel is not directly accessible by car, the entrance is on a narrow road, accessible only by foot. See picture.
- Luggage must be carried all the way from the car to the hotel( no help is offered, as I was told by the receptionist girl, because this is a 3 stars hotel!)
- No place near by to stop the car. No parking place or garrage.
- It is possible to put the car in a garrage in town, for 11Euro /night. It is necessary to get a key for the garragge from the reception and bring it back everytime we used the car.
- Most rooms have no balconies. Ours had a terrible view to the back of other old, ruined houses, surrounding the hotel
-Breakfast was poor, no ham, no eggs (not even boiled), poor quality coffee, no service. We cleaned a table ourselves, the maids were busy talking to each other.
-Bathroom had dirty walls, surrely not cleaned for a long time
-Instead of an air conditioning installation, there was a hole in the wall of the room
-Hotel lobby was small, an extraroom was built within the lobby
- the girl at the reception told us from the beginning: " We have charged you already, so you must stay over the night!"
- value / cost report is very poor. We payed 189 Euro + 11Euro = 200 Euro for one night, three persons
Would not reccommend to anyone, specially not for a holliday at the see-side. The hotel has no garden, no courtyard, no swimming pool, no jacuzzi, no fitness-room, no place to relax or enjoy the warm days at the sea. It is the worst place we ever seen. Add to this the unfriendliness and arrogance of the girl at the reception and you can have a closer to reality image, than the one on the hotel internet presentation.

We are very sorry that your experience has not been positive.
Thank you anyway for having pointed out aspects of our management that would otherwise not been considered. Measures have already been made with our staff to improve the situation you described.
Other aspects are unfortunately linked to the position of our hotel. In the center of Finale is not possible to come in with vehicles.
We have not a pool, but we are at 20mt from the sea and we have an agreement with the Bagni Ondina which are equipped with.
Ours is a small family run hotel, we have not materially the possibility to build a fitness or a Jacuzzi areas. And the absence of a garden is partly compensated with a large terrace facing the sea.
We sincerely hope to have you as our customer to try to transform your impressions.

“Great Value in a Great Little Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2008

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Medusa with our road bikes for eight days. The hotel is right on the water and we booked a "Star" room which overlooked the mediterranean. At night, we would open the patio doors and be put to sleep with the sounds of the waves coming onto the shore.
The rooms was very clean and nice, and the staff was VERY helpful when we asked for any advice or guidance about the area. Each day, we'd either ride around from our hotel or hop on the train (400 meters from the hotel) and visit other areas on the Ligurian coast - sometimes even into France. The hotel has a large, neat storage room for our bikes on the ground floor that was equipped with some basic tools and a pump.
The hotel restaurant has an outside terrace on the second floor where we took all of our meals. The view and atmosphere on this terrace were dreamy. We took the half-board option when reserving and found that the food was of very good quality. In addition to the friendly table service, the chef was very accomodating of our dietary needs and was always willing to prepare something off of the menu if we requested it from the day before.
Final Ligure is small and charming. It would be perfect for anyone with young children because the town and beach clubs have many facilites and activities just for them. We passed through and stopped at many beach towns during our stay in Liguria but we never found a town as small, charming or as beautiful as Finale Ligure.
Overall, I think we were very lucky to have chosen Hotel Medusa and Finale Ligure for our vacation.

  • Liked — Proximity to the ocean, the quiet rooms and the restaurant terrace
  • Disliked — Can't think of anything

“Value for money in Finale Ligure”

The hotel is very well located, central, on the seafront and a short walk from the train station. My wife and I stayed here 10th and 11th Oct. The reception was very small and a little old fashioned but surprisingly our room with a balcony on the 5th floor was very large, recently renovated and nicely decorated. Usually it is the reverse, fancy reception areas and plain rooms! Like most Italian hotels at this time of the year, the airconditioning is turned off. We were lucky to have warm weather, so our room was a little stuffy. We had to sleep with the balcony doors open.

The hotel did not have a laundry service, but they kindly suggested that we could use their washing machine.

Breakfast buffet was OK, typical Italian with very few savoury items and mostly sweet stuff. The breakfast room was very nice with a view of the sea.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

“Nice Hotel in Nice Area”

My wife and I popped off the train into Finale Ligure on a Friday in Mid October. I had chosen the Medusa based on Web work but had no reservation. Because of a tour group, Medusa had only a "piccolo" room for Friday night and we took it. It was tiny but worked for us--it was the pigeons in the airshaft that were a nuisance. (Why is it not acceptable to kill all pigeons?) The next three days they moved us to a wonderful sea front room--more money but worth it.

The hotel staff was friendly, competent, and knew enough English to work things out in combination with our meager Italian. We took the bed and breakfast option and the breakfast food was of high quality. It was especially nice to have breakfast on the open, but covered, terrace that overlooked the promenade (provided we got down early enough to get one of those tables).

At the time we stayed, the largest group of guests seemed to be families from Scandinavia. The hotel seemed to cater well to families with young children. The children we saw seemed delightful and well-behaved--at least to grandparent aged people like us.

In all, the Medusa was a well-situated, clean, and pleasant hotel--and we felt it was a reasonable bargain for the money.
