“We were made feel so unwelcome we couldn't wait to leave”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

We initially booked 10 nights at this B&B. Our circumstances changed so we cancelled 7 nights a couple of weeks before our due arrival date. We were unsure if we would get away at all so were really looking forward to a break even if it was just for 3 nights. We didn't think there was a problem Sue confirmed our date changes and also our 'late check in time' of 9 o'clock. We had paid in advance for our 3 nights.
Imagine our surprise when, on the ferry at 8 o'c waiting to disembark, in the dark in a place we had never been before we received a call to say we had missed the check in time and maybe we should look for somewhere else to sleep that night! I explained that we were about to leave the ferry so she checked with her husband who said ..well OK you CAN come!
Our main reason we booked this accommodation was because of the 'warm welcome and wealth of local knowledge' that other guests had experienced. We received neither a warm or any kind of welcome, were made to feel as if we really should have gone somewhere else and there was no information forthcoming at all. When I asked for a restaurant recommendation/details of somewhere that other guests told us about Ricardo told me he didn't know where the other people had gone. This despite giving them a map and making the reservation for them. When the other guests reminded him of where he had booked for them the night before he grudgingly made the reservation. The maps and directions came from other guests. Susans contribution to our experience was to say 'oh you are here!' and proceed to speak with everyone else. No, good morning, do you need anything? Nothing, we found her to be rude and dismissive. When I asked about internet access Ricardo said Susan knows about that I don't. When I asked again I was told to stand at the end of the garden with my laptop! Needless to say I didn't get to log on until I found internet access in Florence.
Unable to eat flour I asked for some fruit for breakfast. I was given hard, unripe plums and kiwis three mornings in a row. The same ones, because they were still inedible on the 3rd day. It became obvious if I wanted breakfast I was going to have to buy it myself which I did.
The rooms were adequate, not particularly clean and not enhanced by the fact that a cat spent the second day sleeping on our pillows. Our neighbours were awoken (and made lots of noise at the time, 4am, very audible through the walls) when a cat jumped on the gentlemans chest as he was sleeping! Mosquitos were a problem, we brought our own plug in repellants and sprays which were essential.
Overall, we were very happy to be leaving after three days. The only regret I have is that we stayed the second and third night. We had paid for our three nights and as time was short we decided despite the atmosphere we would sleep there anyway. We used this B&B as a stopping point for Florence which was 45 minutes by train away. I cannot say it would be a good base for touring Tuscany as it was quite a distance from places like Lucca etc., unless of course you wish to spend 3 hours in your car travelling to and fro every day.
On the morning we left I went in search of either Ricardo or Susan to say we were leaving, to return the keys and to double check our bill. Both had disappeared, I tried knocking on doors, calling on the telephone and finally gave up leaving the keys with other guests. So much for friendly service.
A week after we returned I sent an email to Susan expressing our disappointment with our stay. I explained that we were upset at our reception and treatment whilst we were there and felt that perhaps there might be an explanation. All I can assume is that our changing the number of days we were to stay was an issue for Susan and Ricardo. I am sorry but that is life. Had it been possible we would have stayed the full time. Unfortunately we couldn't but it still didn't justify how poorly we were treated. As for a reply to my email we are still waiting.......

Room Tip: Get a room in a place where people make you feel welcome and your custom appreciated. Not here!

The original ten night reservation was cancelled four days before arrival and reduced to only three nights. We didn’t complain about the cancelled seven days (in peak season) or about the outstanding balance for the three nights when they left.
We invite our guests to let us know about any food intolerances by a simple email. This lady informed Riccardo at 11 o’ clock at night on their arrival. Luckily Riccardo did manage to get hold of the demanded Kiwi’s for breakfast ─ albeit out of season. Also we would like to confirm that the cities to visit (Lucca, Siena, Pisa and Versilia) are all reachable in approximately I hour by car. Florence is 30 minutes (by Train.) Do please check Google maps and Trenitalia and all the other guest information below for travelling tips. In every bedroom there are plug-in mosquito protectors and restaurants are always recommended and booked with the greatest of pleasure. Thank you, Tripadvisor for giving our family B&B this occasion to reassure our guests of the above.

“Brilliant location for touring Tuscany and charming hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

Just spent 6 nights @ this B&B - brilliant. Location for touring is excellent and Sue and Ricardo made us feel genuinely welcome. Ricardo's daily briefing on where to go and what to see, as well as his excellent restaurant tips (tried 3, all v. good and great value), were a real help. Utterly charming, would love to return and will recommend.

“Relaxing and Peaceful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

Ditto for all the other comments on Trip Advisor for this B&B. Riccardo and Susan are terrific hosts and really go out of their way to help you have a wonderful holiday. Riccardo is a wealth of information for routes, maps, sights, restaurants, etc. Their B&B is situated in the tuscany countryside and offers a relaxing and peaceful accommodation. A great accommodation to stay for a few days or a few weeks!

“Second time back and loved it even more”

This was our second trme back to Ricardo and Susan's lovely B & B. When we started planning our next trip back to Italy we thought about looking and staying elsewhere but decided to go back as we liked it so much the first time and we weren't dispappointed. Ricardo as always was the most gracious host and works really hard to make sure all is good. The villa was even nicer than the first time. We even got to stay in the same room. Breakfast each morning overlooking the countryside is an ideal way to start the day. We got to meet other lovely guest, something we really enjoy about a b&b and enjoyed our impromtu afternoon get togethers under the gazebo with each of us contributing wine and snacks and downloading our days activities. Relaxing, peaceful and the perfect way to end a day. There are some lovely restaurants within walking distance (one evening most of the guests at the villa decided to walk down through the vineyards to a little restaurant and we had a lovely time and the meal was delicious, and fun walking back in the dark with our torches). You will not be disappointed with this lovely B & B and its hosts.

“Great home base for exploring Tuscany”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2011

We stayed six nights at I Melograni in May 2011 and used it as our home away from home while we explored Florence and Tuscany. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have no hesitation in recommending I Melograni to folks that like to stay in bed and breakfast establishments.

There are benefits to staying at a bed and breakfast that you don't receive at a hotel; interaction with other guests over breakfast, at the end of the day; recommendations from the host; and hopefully a restful place to sleep. We had all three during our stay.

It starts with a confirmation from Sue and Ricardo with directions (if you are driving) that should give you an indication of what's to come. The directions are very clear and have every landmark explained so you shouldn't miss a turn. Since our GPS couldn't really locate the b&b, these were very helpful.

The room was clean and comfortable. Good shower and air conditioning, if you request and pay for it. Breakfast on the patio was - well, you couldn't ask for a better way to start your day. Fantastic coffee, fresh juice and breads while overlooking vineyards and olive orchards. Ricardo asks each guest where they are headed that day and prepares maps, advice and recommendations. We left every day with a highlighted map and we were never disappointed by his recommendations for dining, parking and avoiding traffic.

There are two restaurants and a winery that you can walk to from the B&B. The winery makes fabulous Chianti's and the restaurants are very good, but you won't find much english spoken at them.

You don't necessarily have to have a car for your whole stay at I Melograni, the train station is about a 15 minute drive in Empoli and there are taxis or other options for getting to and from the train station. But I would recommend a car for part of your stay so you can enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery on earth.

We had a fabulous time and met really interesting people during our stay, that's what staying at b&b's is supposed to be about.
