“Excellent location, just OK as a hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 April 2009

This small hotel is in the best possible location in Cortina. In the center of the town, inside the "pedestrian only" part and close to everything. It has a parking lot and if you are a guest of the hotel you can drive there. I had a B&B fare, which is good because in Cortina you can find good restaurants, and the breakfast was OK (nothing ultra-fancy, but not disapointing). The hotel is clean, common dependances and rooms/bathrooms, but the furnishing is quite old and irregular accross rooms.
Our bathrooms (we were in 3 in 2 rooms) were big and clean, but had only a bath tub with no shower-box. Disaster. Every shower turned the bathroom into a swimming pool, not to mention the unpleasent experience of showering with the mini-shower in your hand and trowing water everywhere, water in fact that we had to clean after the shower, using the towels available.

“Never again will stay in the Hotel Royal in Cortina”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2009

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Hotel Royal in January. We called in advanced and booked a double bedroom with the hotel directly. While on the phone we inquired about parking, alerting them to the fact that we would be arriving late in the evening. We were reassured that it would be no problem to obtain parking upon arrival. Once arriving to the hotel, we were rudely informed that parking was not included and had to be found on our own. The receptionist was very rude and unhelpful. Regarding our room (#45), there was a horrible sewage smell coming from the bathroom, since it was late in the evening we could not change hotels. We informed the reception and they assured us that they would look into the matter the next morning while we were skiing. Upon our return nothing had changed, only that the odor had worsen. The hotel owner was also very rude and informed us that this was a small hotel and he was not able to fix the problem. No apologies were given, just his rude statement. We would never stay in this hotel again.

“3 room changes”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2007

We chose the Royal for it's central location and went 3* as it was the only Hotel in the brochure which did B&B as we wanted to eat out each evening and try differant restaurants.

I think this could be a great hotel. The location is great. The decor is sad. Each room is differant as we tried 3 during our 7 night stay. Our first room was okay, the furnishings were heavy and badly designed and bathroom needed updating. On our return to our hotel on the 3rd day we were informed that the ceiling in our room had collapsed onto our things and they had moved us to another room next door. This room had Pine cupboards floor to ceiling was dark and felt grubby. The bathroom hadn't been updated since the 1970's, was not of quality and the shower head had been chewed by a pet and left for the next customers, also the bathroom door had claw scratchings where they must have locked it up. Also on moving rooms we were now above a 'cellar bar' which played loud and drumming music to 4am. This time we requested a move, we were given a delightful room, which was at the back, it was bright, had a veranda, clean bathroom with a window, although still with cheap fittings. If we had just of had the first room it would have been fine, if we had been given the 2nd room for the whole of the stay, our review would have been awful. If we had been given the 3rd room from day one our review would have been better. However all rooms did have mechanical safes and we did go out of the hotel for our breakfast on 2 mornings for a change.

“Better Than 3 Star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 April 2006

This hotel is quite grand for a 3 star and certainly didnt dissapoint. Our room overlooked the main square and corso italia and although it wasnt large it was very clean and welcoming with plenty of wardrobe space. There are also large lounges on all floors. My main complaint is that the beds and pillows were both too hard. Agree with previous review about breakfasts etc. The best thing about this hotel is its fantastic location.

“cozy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2006

My husband and I just returned from a ski trip here. We went knowing nothing about the hotel, trusting the recommendation of Alpine Adventures, the tour packager we used. Here's what we found:

The rooms are small but cozy, with hardwood floors and knotty pine
furniture. They are extremely clean.

There is a TV, but no English speaking channels with the exception of a
British sports channel that showed mostly billiards games and boxing.

The bathroom had an enclosed standup shower with good water pressure
and hot water.

The breakfast each morning had an ample assortment of homemade granola
cereals, homemade pastries, rolls, meats, coffee and juices, although
with limited variety we were pretty sick of it by the end of the week!
Staff is slow to clean up breakfast plates of other guests - meaning you
may have to sit at a dirty uncleared table for breakfast.

The hotel is in a great location in the middle of the corso italia, and
very close to the shuttle bus stop for the mountains.

The staff was cordial but seemed a bit unapproachable. We did not get
any help making dinner reservations or arranging our skiing each day.
The only written traveler information available was in german. The hotel
does not seem to get many english speaking guests.

In the building there is also a charming cafe operated by the same
family, which is a good place to grab a bite and coffee in the afternoon.

The rooms have no safe, and the walls are a bit thin.
