Review Tenuta dell’ Argento
Civitavecchia, Italy
On a cruise from Rome (Civitavecchia) decided to come one day early in case of airline connection problems; found the Tenuta dell’ Argento hotel online, emailed Filippo, received a quick response and made reservations easily; Filippo’s english was excellent (as we don’t speak Italian) and he made arrangements for a private cab to pick us up at the airport for the 45 minute drive to Civitavecchia (130 Euros) . Arrived at the hotel about 10: 30 am, Filippo showed us two rooms and let us pick which one we wanted! It is NOT the typical US chain hotel, but a very very pleasant small hotel. The hotel is on a hillside about 2 miles from the port and the town, with a beautiful panoramic view of the Mediterranean, the ships at the dock and downtown Civitavecchia. It is a working ranch with horseback riding and beef cattle. We could have stayed downtown in the middle of the action but decided for this pastoral setting instead. It was the right decision for us. It is very quiet and we saw a beautiful sunset, with the sun going down in the west over the water. Customer service is outstanding. We took advantage of their free shuttle and went into town for a couple hours of sightseeing. The waterfront is picturesque, but the town itself is contemporary (since WWII). There is one fort from the 1500’s that is worth seeing. We had dinner at the hotel (8pm-10pm). There is a restaurant attached to the hotel. The English dinner menu is divided into starters, first course, second course, sides and desserts. We ordered two first course and two second course items. Everything was excellent including the house red wine. Remember that there is a working beef cattle ranch associated with the hotel and the filet of beef and the meat rolled with cheese were outstanding. Our room (#23) has a queen sized bed; two pull out couches and vaulted ceilings with exposed beams. The only disadvantage is not being able to walk out of the hotel to a downtown area. But overall great choice!
