We spent one week of our vacation in Cervia and returned home relaxed and satisfied.
Grand Hotel Cervia is the only hotel directly located on the beach and offers free use of a beach umbrella and deck chair. It's a big advantage in value, because when you stay in other hotels you need first to cross the street (lungomare) and find yourself a public spot (lido) where they charge you ridiculous prices per chair and umbrella (ca. EUR170.- per week). The hotels beach has also a little bar where you can get delicious coffee.
The water quality in Cervia was mostly good, some days worse one day perfectly clear.
We enjoyed full board and liked the extensive breakfast buffet (more than you usually can expect from Italy) and the four course lunch and dinner. Both dinner and lunch offered also a cold buffet as appetizer with lots of vegetables and salads. The menu choices were very good and we enjoyed just about every course.
The BIG disappointment was the service during the first few days. It often took forever to get the next course served, sometimes even the wrong dish, sometimes only 2 dishes at a time while the other two at the table had to wait for their dish. We were pretty stressed out about this, because we spent too much time at the table (lunch 2:15hrs) while we had our baby son at the table. He of course didn't like sitting around this long, so we had to put him to bed for his nap while continuing our lunch or dinner afterward.
We finally complained to the MaîtreD and also to the hotel manager on the second day. After our complaint the staff made an effort to work more efficiently. Finally after the third day the service was back to normal again, though sometimes a little lengthy. But of course you're on vacation and it's nice to relax and chat and not spend too much sun outdoors under the hot sun over noon!
The rooms were cleaned and replenished with fresh towels and linens every day. They are rather small in size, we had to move some furniture aside to make space for the baby cot. As soon as we were unpacked we had to put away the suitcases, as the bed was the only spot with enough space to open them up. Fortunately we received a first floor, sea-view room which offered a balcony. That space was our rescue, as our son could run out on that extra space and we could hand up our beach towels and swim trunks.
As mentioned above we traveled with our son (17 months old) and also with his grandfather and grandmother. Italy is in general very friendly towards young families and service staff easily help out with special needs for your kids. This hotel confirmed this by all means.
If you're looking to get an internet connection, there is a free terminal near the lobby. The hotel also offers wifi in the rooms at a charge.
Parking is free.
You can get bikes to roam Cervia at no charge, there's a bike path all along the beach.
