On our 8 day circle-tour of Sicily, we stayed one night at Hotel Le Calette 20 October, 2011. We arrived very easily and check-in was extremely friendly and professional. We were given a description and small tour of the heart of the property as we were shown to our room. I was pleased to find that Hotel Le Calette looked even better in person than what I anticipated from its online pictures. Additionally, somehow I assumed it was a larger property, but was pleased with how intimate it felt--like a boutique property. There were at least 2 lounges/large public rooms where I would have enjoyed relaxing had our stay been longer. I very much admired the decor of the lobby and these 2 lounges, as well as the dining and breakfast rooms.
I suppose this is an active resort in the peak of summer season with a lovely pool and outdoor whirlpool in the courtyard full of lounge chairs and tables, as well as a private beach area (we didn't walk there). I also imagine it could be quite busy during an event, such as a wedding reception or similar activity. Even in mid-October, there were families here (I believe there was a school break and some families were vacationing) and people in the pool. It made me wish I had brought my swimsuit.
Our room was more than adequately spacious, with plenty of storage (2 large shelves in the room, plus the closet and adequate floor space if you don't travel with trunks for suitcases) and a lovely terrace from which we could view the sea and the Aeolian Islands in the distance. Alas, it rained part of the time we were here and we couldn't spend much time out there. The bathroom was well-kept and large by Italian hotel standards. I don't know what made previous posters believe this resort was past its prime or in need of renovation. Nothing I saw was dingy or worn out, nothing was even "tired-looking", the whitewashed walls inside and out seemed fresh, the bed linens were in good condition, the bathroom was comfortable and modern, etc. Reviewers who think it isn't necessarily up to 4-star standards may not be aware that an Italian property is awarded stars by the amenities it offers (in other words, an impartial, objective checklist--a/c, restaurant, pool, meeting rooms, etc.) as opposed to evaluating it on its ambiance or the manufacturer of its bedlinens or even the quality of its services/staff. I was quite satisfied it deserved its 4-star status, and we all know that even among properties with similar star ratings there will be differences in decor, style, service, and other such subjective elements. I was especially pleased at our off-season rate of 110 euros/night for a club double seaview room, which is the most we spent at any property on this trip, but it is also the only 4-star, resort-type property we chose, and all the others were 3-star hotels or 2-3 star "equivalent" B&Bs. The same room is easily 210 euros/night in summer.
Breakfast was outstanding by any measure. You had the typical Italian breakfast standards of breads, jams, and coffee + juice, but it also went far beyond with hams and salamis, eggs (boiled and scrambled), cereals, yogurts, fresh fruit, fresh-squeezed juice. We elected to eat dinner in the restaurant the night we arrived and enjoyed grilled lamb chops and fresh swordfish--yum on both counts!
Since we had a car, there was no sense attempting the 20+ minute walk into town. I had seen previous reviews where some who walked were dismayed at the distance between the resort and town, but that is no fault of the resort. I guess I can't imagine why one would walk anyway unless they assumed they could not find parking in town during busy summer tourist season (or if a bus was not running), but this was October (parking was easy) and I had already reached my limit of walking that day around Tindaris and Santa Stefano di Camastra, thank you very much. If we had any complaint at all, it would be in terms of parking at Le Callette itself--if the hotel is full or near to full, there simply aren't enough spaces and we had to park outside a gate. However, it would have been possible to snag one of the last available parking places near our room with our tiny Fiat 500 IF certain other of the guests had parked correctly, so maybe that's not 100% the fault of the hotel, either. When one parked badly, then the next parked badly, and at some point, there were even cars straddling the lines denoting parking spaces, so fully 2 parking places were useless due to thoughtless parking of other guests.
Overall, I would love to come back to Le Calette and would recommend it to others!
