“High above Cefalu sits a quiet, picturesque retreat”

My husband, 14 year old son and I spent two nights at Case Saponara while touring Sicily. I found this B and B on Booking.com. for a cost of 80 euros per night including breakfast. We had two large private ensuite rooms on the second floor. The rooms were more than adequate in size, we each had a large armoire for storage. Additionally, our room had a walk in closet where we stored or luggage and hung our coats. Wifi is free. We had small televisions that were not operating, not a concern for us. I like to read in the evenings, and the lightning was adequate at the bedside. Additionally you have access to the kitchen whenever you like. As other reviews have mentioned, the road leading to the B and B, especially the last kilometer is extremely steep. If you don't care to drive in mountains, don't go. The drive leaving t from the B and B can be more challenging as our GPS took us two different routes each morning leading us back to the highway (SS115 I think) which is the scenic drive along the coast. If you do go, and arrive in the evening I suggest either dining before arriving or bringing dinner with you. There are no restaurants in the area near the Case Saponara and I can't imagine anyone going back down the mountain after arriving for the evening. The B and B is located in the Parco della Madonia. In the morning, you will enjoy a spectacular view of the Mediterranean while you enjoy your coffee and breakfast. We had melon from Nino's brother garden and fresh lemon cake, yum! I don't speak Italian, and was unable to communicate very well with Nino's brother the first evening but he was very gracious and made certain we were comfortable. Nino met us the next morning and answered any questions that we had about the area. If you want to experience lodging in a scenic, secluded area of Sicily near Cefalu than this is your respite. If you don't have a car, I believe Nino or his brother will collect you from the train station. They are very good to correspond by e-mail to answer any questions.

“Case Saponara - Peace and Tranquility”

We booked the case Saponara for three nights as part of a two week visit to Sicily. Although the access road was difficult I have been on worse and after touring many parts of Europe by car I do not expect a three lane highway to any hotel booking. By following Nino's directions we found the Case without any hardship. (I do not use sat.nav.) Located just off the main Cefalu to Messina road the Case is high on a hillside with outstanding views towards Cefalu. The accommodation was excellent, beautifully clean and with the choice of a ground or first floor room. There is a communal terrace where a fabulous breakfast is served. Nino, our host, was very attentive and knowledgeable about the local area. Cefalu is very pretty, but busy, and the restaurants can be quite expensive. We did have one meal in the local Taverna in San Ambrogia - it was awful. However, don't be put off the Case on account of this experience. Our stay at Saponara was probably one of the highlights of our visit to Sicily. I would thoroughly recommend Case Saponara to anyone.

“For the unflappable traveler”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2008

Case Saponara in the Parco della Madonie, San Ambrogio area in the hills above Cefalu was certainly a surprise. We booked this B&B on BBPlanet.com where we made all our other reservations for our Sicily trip and based our expectations on the online description. Fortunately, we and the friends we were traveling with aren’t easily discouraged or we might have forfeited our deposit and left without having given the place a chance.

While we were on the road, we received an email from the person we booked with, Carmela Ricciardello, offering precise driving directions. This was very helpful as the place is advertised as being 7 km from Cefalu but it is in such a small, out of the way, area that we would never have found it on our own. In fact, when we arrived in S. Ambrogio, a very small village and asked directions, several people had no idea how to direct us. Nevertheless, we finally found the place, high up in the hills, 1 km about S. Ambrogio. Driving up was a challenge as the road became a dirt road and the incline was extremely steep. When we arrived, we were greeted by a very lovely man who spoke no English. He parked our car and showed us one room in a stone cottage where he was working to finish the bathroom. Tools and building materials were piled around the property. He then took us across the road to another stone building where there were two rooms with a shared bath. The front room had a refrigerator and a stove. The bedrooms and bath were newly finished and we decided that we would share those rooms with our friends instead of having two of us stay in the still unfinished building. The rooms turned out to be fine for the night, though there was no air conditioning or cross ventiliation. Breakfast, consisting of some packaged pastries, juice, tea and coffee, was served at a table outside the building. The host’s family came out to greet us and gave us some cactus pears to taste. None spoke English well enough to carry on a conversation.

We never did meet Carmela, the English speaking person who emailed and spoke to us on the phone, but we managed to communicate enough with our host to find out where in S. Ambrogio to have dinner. It was dark by the time we settled in and we didn’t want to drive all the way into Cefalu and back as we weren’t familiar with the route so we picked one of the three trattoria’s in town and had a wonderful, multi course meal at La Taverna del Borgo in S. Ambrogio.

Until Saponara and the grounds are finished, we wouldn’t recommend it to anyone other than the very adventurous. There’s not enough in S. Ambrogio to warrant a trip up there and, if you want to eat at La Taverna, they have a shuttle bus from Cefalu.

  • Liked — Room and bathroom were clean
