The Luxor Beach hotel is a well run, clean and comfortable hotel located right on the beach in the middle of Cattolica.
I stayed here for a week in July with my family of four. We took two rooms as I heard that the rooms were on the small side and this turned out to be a good decision. Rooms are clean and tidy, but I would not have enjoyed a week there with four of us in the same room. Average size looks to be about 15 sq meters (around 150 sq feet). However, of course, you have to pay full price (during the season anyway) so we ended up paying Eur 300 per day for two rooms and four people half board. We were put into two rooms next to each other within our own little corridor which was very nice, but they were located at the front of the hotel with a street view, rather than a sea or pool view. Talk to the management about your needs before booking.
Service was friendly, several of the staff spoke good English and Thierry and his staff in the restaurant were exceptional. The hotel offers a B&B rate a half board rate and a full board rate and I would recommend the half board. It is only a few Euros more than the B&B rate and you can choose between Lunch or Dinner in addition to breakfast. The food is OK, not a five star gourmet experience but perfectly adequate, but you'll get bored eating every meal there all the time if you're there for more than a day or two. Also, there are several good restaurants in Cattolica (Picadilly Mare ten minutes walk away springs to mind) which you shouldn't miss.
The pool is fine, but it faces the street and get's a fair bit of shade during the day. It's also cramped, with only room for 20 or so loungers for a hotel with 200 or so guests. The bar area is nice, however, a bit pricey but a great place to relax in the evenings.
A couple of minor problems. There is a small underground car park which costs 9 Eur per day. This is a fair price but it's very small and they cram as many cars as possible in there and ask you to leave keys at reception so they can move the cars around. My car was scratched while it was down there and they don't appear to have any formal procedures to do much about this. The manager got a contact of his to paint over the scratch and clean it up a bit which was very nice, but it could potentially have cost me significant cash. Also, the wireless internet connection was down most of the time and very poor when it was "working".
All in all, the hotel was absolutely fine. However, readers should be aware about Cattolica itself. It was our first trip and we were expecting a quieter hoilday town. Cattolica can get very packed and claustrophobic during the season. In typical Italian style, every inch of the beach is covered with parasols and sun loungers, which you rent by the day or the week. Every hotel have their share of a particular area (Luxor Beach area is, of course, right next to the hotel) but the beach furniture in Cattolica is very very close to each other. Also, the wooden boardwalk along the entire length of the seafront gets very packed during the evenings, as do the pedestrianised areas leading up to the main square. On our last few days we discovered the port area (20 mins walk from the hotel) which was much less packed, simply due to the geography of that area. Should we return to Cattloca we will almost certainly head for a hotel in the port area. But that's a matter of taste.
