“Tranquil and beautiful”

My friend and I stayed at this hotel for 10 nights in September and had a great stay.

The Hotel
The hotel is so peaceful, you can't help but relax and soak up the sunshine. It's a beautiful looking hotel and commands superb views. Our room was very nice, not luxurious but comfortable with stunning views. The balcony was small but with just about enough space for the two of us. We were on the top floor at the front of the hotel. The bathroom was well equipt but the shower was a bit poky.

The pool is wonderful - plenty of sun loungers and deck chairs, lovely views and very quiet. Some days we were the only ones there, probably because it was towards the end of the season. You can take short walks around the hotel gardens. We went to the beach a few times using the free mini bus laid on. It's pretty regular and takes you door-to-door. The beach was lovely - golden sand, very peaceful, plenty of free sun loungers (within the hotel's private area). We went for a few walks along the beach and enjoyed lunch on the beach in the cafe restaurants.

The hotel staff were so lovely and extremely helpful. They helped us so much with finding details of buses, walks, restaurants and booking trips for us. They are lovely, friendly people and couldn't do enough for us.

Breakfast is on the terrace if the weather is good enough. There is a pretty good selection. We had dinner in the hotel on a couple of occasions and the food was excellent with 4 courses. I think it cost about £30 a head. In the summer dinner is servied on the terrace with lovely views, in September we ate in the indoor restaurant which wasn't as special as you couldn't see the views.

The Area
I've travelled to Italy a lot and wasn't sure what to expect of Cilento as it's less developed. However, be re-assured it's a lovely area and a bit quieter but with plenty to see and do. We travelled to Paestum one day (about 1 hour 30 minutes on the local bus - very easy). Paestum is fascinating. We hired a boat with Giovanni for half day and had a lovely trip around the coast with stops for swimming. We walked from the hotel along the coast path via Punta Licosa to Ogliastro which was a lovely walk. It's about 8 miles and I will never forget the smell of pine trees. It's fairly easy to do (there's a road that's marked private but you need to walk along it, which we did without any problem), there are a few areas that are a bit rugged so you need to wear trainers. Ogliastro is pretty with a few restaurants - we had lunch and a swim there and caught the bus back to the hotel.

San Marco di Castellabate is a 10/15 minute walk away. It's a small town with a marina and has a few restaurants. As it was the end of the season there weren't many open. We tried a couple and enjoyed them both. Stella Marina (on the little road leading to the harbour) is an indoor restaurant with lovely, reasonably priced food. KBar (in the piazza) has a pretty outdoor terrace and the food is good but a little more expensive. There's a nice bar by the marina for evening drinks whilst watching the sun set.

We visited Santa Maria di Castellabate a few times - in the day and in the evening for dinner. There's plenty of shops to look around. The hotel mini bus drops you off and picks you up during the day. In the evenings we took the last mini bus there and Antonio (htoel's minibus driver) collected us for 10 Euros. There's plenty of good restaurants and bars to enjoy.

We visited Castellabate (the town on the hill) a couple of times. It's really pretty with stunning views. We caught the local bus which was really easy. On our last night we booked the ape (3 wheel truck) to get there, which was great fun and had dinner at Ristorante Cantina Belvedere. Lovely food, the best views and friendly staff.

If you're looking for a peaceful, relaxing holiday in a quiet area with a few days sight seeing, then you've found the right place and the right hotel!

“Perfect wedding / holiday venue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2008

Myself and my husband held our wedding in hotel hermitage in august this year and we were extremely impressed with it. The location of the hotel is perfect, in a quiet area with outstanding views of the sea and cilento national park. The hotel has plenty of amenities...football pitches, crazy golf, large swimming pool and childs pool with slide. Most of our wedding guests stayed in the hotel and were equally impressed.
The food served in the hotel was of top quality, so much so that many of the guests changed to full board after sampling their first meal. The staff were extremely friendly and did everything they could to make ourselves and other guests happy.
The wedding day itself was fantastic, it was organised by 'Amore Weddings' in Ireland who did a fantastic job. We could not be more grateful to them or the hermitage for giving us such a superb time.
We will most definately return to this hotel, as will many of our guests. It is a perfect location for couples or family holiday as well as the perfect wedding venue.

“Wonderful staff and brilliant location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2008

We stayed here for the last week of our honeymoon. The staff were very welcoming, helpful and friendly and really made a fuss of us. Nothing was too much trouble.

The rooms were clean and tidy and we had a balcony with a fabulous view. The private beach was very busy and we only went to the beach one day because of this. However, we were traveling in the middle of the Italian summer holidays so everywhere was pretty hectic.

Castellabate is a beautiful hilltop village and a pleasant place to spend an afternoon/evening. It was very quiet when we were there and a good get away to avoid the crowds. From San Marco you can also get the ferry to Capri (about 2 hours). The Greek temples at Paestum are within easy reach and there is public transport from San Marco to get you there.

Overall we loved our stay and were glad that we chose to spend a relaxing week here at the end of our honeymoon!

“Stunning location”

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Hermitage for 5 days this June in room 24. The room was on the top floor and had two small balconies. The room was comfortable and spotlessly clean, however our shower was particularilly small. We also stayed during a heatwave and the air conditioning was struggling.

The hotel is aproximately a two hour drive from Naples and is located on the edge of a medieval village set within the Cilento National Park. The restaurant, bar, terrace and pool all have breathtaking views.

The hotel is very welcoming, the staff extremely helpful and the hotel owner is fantastic. When we visited there were mainly older couples and Italian families staying at the hotel.

The hotel offers a good continental break fast with fantastic coffee. The evening meals are fair, however we ate out most evenings. I recommend the Bellavista which is located behind the hotel car park the views are stunning and the food excellent.

The area the hotel is situated in is quite touristy and a little scruffy but absoultely charming with lots of traditional italian shops and cheap clothing/ shoe shops. There are also a lot of local markets in the area.

The hotel operates a courtesy bus to a nearby beach and town which is very busy but definately worth visiting.

We loved the hotel and the staff in particular made it a very enjoyable stay.

“Deceiving”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2006

Hotel Hermitage was portrayed as a 4 star property with all amenities to make one very comfortable. We had booked a suite with a view of the sea; a suite should mean a bedroom plus a sitting room/area. We were given a very small room--so small that 2 people could not pass at the end of the bed. We complained and the answer was " because you have a view and a balcony, we call it a suite." We had paid plenty and I might add that we had to wire the room charge from the U.S. to Italy before our arrival. The bathroom was tiny; the shower stall was so small that if one dropped his soap, forget it. One could not bend over to even wash his feet. The doors of the shower stall stuck and didn't want to slide. The free standing closet was rickety; clothes hangers were odds and ends that past guests had left behind. We were lucky to have a view. Most of the rooms face the parking lot. While we were there for 3 nights, the hotel hosted two very loud parties out on the pool deck beneath our room. The dining room staff was not professional. I had to almost argue with the manager to see a menu. (I like to know exactly what I'm ordering and what I'm paying.) The only thing wonderful about this property is the view; unfortunately only a half dozen rooms have a view. Be careful when considering this hotel. Ask plenty of questions.
