A large group of us (16) travelled from the UK to stay in Canazei for a week's spring skiing. We stayed at the Hotle Azola, a small 3 star hotel, about 400m from the centre of town & 800m from the ski lifts . We chose it because of the price and the fact that they had a steam room and sauna. With the end of season Dolomite deal (7 nights stay for price of 6 and 6 day ski pass for price of 5) the nightly half board rate was around Euros 49 per night per person.
The Hotel is family run and has been for many years and the service is excellent. they work really hard. It has a small freindly bar where drinks are reasonable and someone is there to serve until the last person goes to bed. The rooms are not enormous but they're fine and kept very clean (ours had a bath, I'm over 6 foot and i could stretch out in it), and most of them have a balcony with a chair.
The food was a revalation. the chef produced great local food every night( particularly impressive when you consider the daily rate). There's a help yourself salad bar to start with then normally 3 choices of first course (normally pasta, risotto, gnochi or soup) followed by 3 choices of main course and 5 or so puddings. On Easter sunday the chef put together a 4 course meal which was absolutely excellent and better than many meals i've eaten in good london restauarnts.
On the logisics of getting to the ski lift the hotel has its own mini bus that will take you to and from the lifts(you can store skis etc at the hire shops at the base of the lift so you don't have to cart them about) but it's only a 10-15 min walk through the pretty town back to the hotel anyway.
Emanuella and her team run a great little hotel which when you consider the price, service , food etc is excellent value for money.
