“Great Value...if you're not too picky”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2008

I actually found this hotel on line and had my travel agent add it to my itinerary. The website said at the time that there was an attached restaurant, but it had closed. Not that big of a deal though because there are some fantastic restaurants that are less than 10 minutes by car. The hotel was being renovated and from what I saw they were doing it right. Our room had a nice balcony that was pleasant with the evening breeze. The furnishings were old Ikea if I had to guess. The manager was very helpful and assisted me in putting together a fan that I bought at the local home improvement store. It's basically a budget hotel and ok for what it is. I'd stay there again.

  • Liked — I loved the location.
  • Disliked — A little run down, but being renovated.

“Misleading”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2007

Not a "bio-hotel", as advertised. We thought breakfast would be wholesome, but it just consisted of ordinary hotel/hostel breakfast food (conventional butter, coffee, conventional milk, NO vegan options). The place is housed in an old 1960's-70's hotel, which is cool, and it looked like the owners were in the process of remodeling--but our room was simply a dark and shabby hotel room with some new lamps and faux-beech furniture.

Staff was not helpful and they scoffed when we said we didn't have a car, even though "arriving by bus" directions are given on their website. In reality, the hotel was not really accessible from Florence by bus, since the bus ride took about 50 minutes, very few buses ran each day, and the last bus left from Florence before 7 PM every night.

If you want to see Florence, you should spend your money on a hotel in the center. If you want to enjoy a natural setting away from the dim of the city, then spend your money somewhere with a better atmosphere.

“Noisy and far from everything”

First: Very hard to find a taxi at the train station i Calenzano. Even if you have the phone number you get from the turist info in Firenze the people does not understand you if you speak english(not enougth anyway)

Taxi is expensive . For the 6 km from the train station in Calenzano to the hotel I paid about 20 euro.

I booked via wwte.com via Norwegian and paid by visa. The hotel had not any reservation in my name and did not even know they had a deal with wwte to book rooms via them. (also wwte`s fault because they had the wrong phone number etc. Not recommended to book via wwte in norway. Lots of problems, and they have poor rutine on fixing problems. I can tolerate problems, but not caos, exuses, more caos and more exuses. Lots of time before I got my money back)

Back to the hotel:

Some of the staff(the women) are very nice and helpful, the men are not very friendly nor helpful. They do not speak very good english.

Breakfast is mostly cakes/croissants and coffee or juice. You eat by the reception desk. No resaurant.

There is a bus but the info you get about price and time tables are not accurate. Ps. The bus driver does not change, have lots of coins(about 3 euro to Firenze, I cant remember the exact amount)

The location is between dark hills. I found it to be a lot darker and less sunny than the picture.

Its very noisy and when people come back from late dinners you will not be able to sleep if you go to bed early(as I did, woman, travelling alone, you dont want to walk around after dark:))

All in all I will probably not stay here again. Even if the hotel is cheap, it is better to pay the 20 euros the taxi cost more a night to stay closer to train stations etc.

“Actually refused to stay here.”

The Hotel la Selva accomplishes its room photos by taking a photograph of bedroom furniture in its lobby. The actual rooms resemble not so much Florentine elegance as the locker room in the YMCA - in decor and smell. Furthermore, unless you have rented a car, it will be impossible and even dangerous for you to explore Florence - which is a 50 Euro, 1-hour trip away by taxi, not the short walk promised on the website. The only inexpensive option is a bus that comes about five times a day, and to catch it you must wait in a road and risk getting hit by cars. There is no restaurant, no vineyard, nothing, excepting a sometimes-open restaurant down the street. They don't pick up their phone, and nobody speaks English (I speak Italian fine, but it may be a problem for some). I've never seen a business misrepresent itself to the extent the hotel has. Travelocity asked them about everything, they denied it (even the walk to Florence bit, easily verifiable by map), I had pictures to back it up. I've noticed Travelocity has since taken it off of their hotel list. You're much better off contacting a hotel in Florence proper - plenty of them list as being in Florence when in fact they are in the region and not the city. There are plenty of cheap, safe accomodations right by the Arno. Or - stay in Prato or Pistoia, both charming, and take the train in to Florence.

“Don't be fooled”

Don't be fooled by the website.
We booked this over the web only to discover the rooms are not nearly as big as they look on the web.
Our room, which we refused to stay in, had clearly been occupied by a chain smoker and all the management could say was that it was a non smoking hotel and they could not be responsible for what people did in the privacy of their rooms.
The organic restaurant attached to the hotel was closed for a month, a fact they failed to point out when booking.
They also state that they are just 16km from Florence, more like 25km and therefore a very expensive taxi ride into town,
The regular buses they also boast stop at 6pm and despite all these claims the only response from the staff was that we should have hired a car!
Needless to say we didn't stay there and despite our protestations we were still obliged to pay for one night - but rather that than be trapped miles out of town in a foodless, soulless and misrepresented hotel.

  • Liked — Leaving it
  • Disliked — The claims on the website compared to reality
