“Not the best stay...”

I stayed at three hotels while on a bike tour of the northern mountains of Italy. The Hotel Baita dei Pini ranked last of the three. The hotel looks very nice and other folks on the tour had a good stay there. Unfortunately my stay was full of problems. I was traveling solo and the first room they gave me had a shared entrance with another family. The shower was missing a class panel which would make for a cold shower and a very wet floor. And, of course, the wifi was advertised to be throughout the hotel, but no signal in this room. So I asked if they had another room available. Which fortunately they did, but it was a single efficiency. You could practically lay across the width of the room and your luggage either went on the bed or the top of the desk. Not a big deal as I was solo, but I had paid for a much nicer room. Then after a long day of riding I come back for a nice hot shower, but find there is no hot water. Maintenance came and fixed the problem, but you really shouldn't have these issues with the rates they charge. They hotel is also located on a corner and the traffic noise was very loud at night as you needed to have the window open to cool the room.

The breakfast and dinner were good, but not great, and since we were a group (8 people at our table) the service was hurried and very impersonal. They took your order by raising your hand when the waiter asked who wanted one entree versus another. Drinks were hard to come by as well. We did not experience this at any other hotel.

So all-in-all I would say the Hotel Baita dei Pini was just average and there are better hotels to stay at in Bormio. Which I did when I returned to Bormio with my family two weeks later. I would recommend the Hotel San Lorenzo as an alternative...

“Traditional mountain charm & incredible food”

I have stayed at the Baita dei Pini over 5 times now on trips to lovely Bormio, the most recently in mid February 2011.

Bormio is a great destination, with plentiful skiing options and a bustling town with many activities.

The baita dei pini, with its friendly staff, charming traditional decor and absolutely incredible food is the only place I would stay.

It has everything you'd expect from a top mountain style hotel - and a restaurant that is out of this world. The chef, originally from Piemonte, creates traditional Italian dishes with superb ingredients and a modern touch. I travel regularly through Italy, most of the time in search of a top meal - and this is certainly very close to the top of my list.

Highly highly recommended - both the destination and the hotel.

“great hotel and staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

I stayed here with cycling group in early June. The hotel was mostly vacant except a few people touring with the Giro d'Italia. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the food and the staff. I was originally in a small room, but was upgraded to a larger unit when I complained. The unit I had on the top floor was spacious and well appointed with a great view. If I ever come back to Bormio, I will definately stay here again.

“Nice family run hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 March 2010

We were here for a week with our one year old baby last winter.
We got a double room with a cot, it was big, clean, it had very nice views, and the food was excellent. The staff was nice, so, in general, we were pretty happy with our stay, however I have two major complaints.
1. Our room was located just on top of the piano bar, so we could hear the piano and people singing until very late at night. We complained a couple of times but nothing changed. Make sure you don't get a room just on top of the window.
2. When we made the reservation and ask for the cot, they told us they wouldn't charge us anything extra. However, my husband and I were staying in breakfast + dinner plan, and they charged us breakfast and dinner for our baby, even when she didn't eat anything. She had a place and a high chair always ready in our table, and we always asked for her pot to be warm up, but she never eat anything. We had a long discussion when we were checking out, but at the end we had to pay about 25 euros extra per day.
