This small, family-run resort in the countryside near Borgo San Lorenzo, only 45 minutes from Florence by car or train, is as charming, welcoming and comfortable as can be. The family that owns and runs the hotel, and all of the staff, are extremely friendly and helpful in every way. They clearly take an interest in each of their guests, making sure you have all that you need, offering advice and helping make and even execute plans tailored to your needs and interests. We rented a car and drove from Florence, but you can take a train to Borgo San Lorenzo and ask them to pick you up. One young couple we met arrived at the train station without a plan to make their way to the hotel, and one of the owners drove down to pick them up, then arranged for and drove them to a horseback riding expedition the next day.
The rooms are either apartments or villas. We stayed in a 2-story apartment, with a living room and dining room/kitchen and small bathroom downstairs, and a master bedroom and bath upstairs. It had all the feel of a country home, with a tile floor downstairs, a wooden staircase and floor upstairs, wooden shutters with latches on all the windows and doors, but with all the modern amenities you would expect from a 5-star hotel. It was the most comfortable bed we slept in during our visit to Italy, and the largest and most comfortable space. The bedroom was of a good size, and the bathroom quite large, with a large Jacuzzi tub, two sinks and plenty of space. The shower stall was quite small, as is typical in Italy, and the water temperature fluctuated a bit, but that was a minor issue for us. In our apartment, you had to step down a large step onto the top of the staircase, then up another large step into the bathroom, so we had to be very careful when getting up to the bathroom at night. If you are not agile enough to handle stairs or are prone to injury, you should be sure to get an apartment or villa that offers a bedroom on the first floor. The atmosphere is extremely quiet, with the sole exception of the heating system (used only in cold weather months), which clangs a bit each time it turns on and off, but which did not disturb our sleep.
The buffet breakfast is great, with everything from breads, cheese, meats, fruit, pastries (sometimes homemade by their own chef) to cereal, muesli, yogurt and fruit. They are happy to make you eggs to order, and possibly other items you may want, so just ask. The service is very attentive and friendly. We also ate dinner at the hotel restaurant one evening, and the food varied just a bit in quality. My wife had duck breast that was a bit too chewy (perhaps overcooked) and not salty enough, but my beef carpaccio was quite good, the salad we shared was truly fresh and delightful with the superb olive oil and aceto they placed on the table, and the desserts (a chocolate tiramisu and a panacotta with chocolate sauce) were extraordinary. We do not drink, but they offer a fine wine selection that each of the other tables enjoyed.
My wife and I each enjoyed a massage in the full spa and wellness center they offer, and the masseuse was very professional and very skilled, had great hands (warm and strong) for her trade. The spa treatments are very reasonably priced and well worth the indulgence.
The resort also offers a washer and dryer, in case you need to do laundry (as we did). Just get tokens from the reception, and they provide detergent and instructions in the laundry room.
We visited in mid-November, but in the fair weather months, there are swimming pools (family pool and quiet pool), a tennis court, a small soccer field the kids (or grownups ) can enjoy. The resort also arranges a variety of other activities (including truffle hunting in season!), there is a great hiking or jogging path (they will give you a map), and it is located at the foot of the Alpe de Bendetto mountains, so you can either drive through gorgeous, winding mountain roads or head out to Florence, Siena, Pisa, San Gimignano and a host of other nearby Tuscan towns and cities. We chose to leave our car at the train station and take the train to Florence, a much easier and faster way to get there, but we drove to Siena another day. Whenever possible, take the train, to avoid some of the driving and parking headaches in Italy.
If you want a relaxing holiday in the Tuscan countryside at a beautiful, charming resort with all the modern amenities and a wide variety of activities and excellent, familiar service, stay at Monsingor della Casa!
Room Tip: Any apartment or villa should be superb, but if you prefer not to go up and down stairs, request one...
