“Charming Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I have been staying at the Grand Hyatt in Muscat for the past 11 years with an average of twice a year. It is a very charming hotel that is very business friendly, whilst it retains good offerings for the leisurely traveller.

The Service is very good and most of the staff are extremely attentive and pleasant; the pleasant side is definitely a reflection of the country, which is a very serene, sombre and traditional country with a unique flavour that stems from its location and trade history.

The rooms are spacious and well-maintained, whilst the in-room amenities can use a refresh. Pool area is very nice, and the beach area is a public area, but that should not worry any traveller, since all the beaches in that area are clean and safe.

They do lack a proper Spa. Their fitness centre, although it holds all the needed equipment can be improved for sure.

The hotel boasts a few bars with live entertainment and they are buzzing and happening on weekends with locals, ex-pats and tourists. Ask about their happy hour specials, since Alcohol is quite expensive in the hotel.

Most of the dining experience at the different restaurants is good, yet the main buffet restaurant can sure do with some healthier food choices.

An overall Charming Hotel for both business and pleasure…

Room Tip: Higher rooms, if you want a sea view so levels 3 and 4 or if you have kids and you want to be closer...

“Great Hotel, spectacular view, lackluster service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

The good:
The hotel, located on the beach adjacent to "Embassy Row," really is spectacular. The grounds are well maintained, the heated pool is very welcoming (and w/ a "current lane," truly enjoyable), the room was well decorated and comfortable, if not huge. We had our <2-year old w/ us, sleeping in a crib, which was ~8 feet from our bed. For a King View room, it really was fine. I didn't want to opt for the MUCH MORE expensive suite to put our son in another room.
- The view from our room truly was spectacular; we looked out on the pool and the Gulf of Oman, very scenic. We did have to pay and extra ~RO 15 for that.
- The manager at their Italian restaurant, Tuscany (good food, btw), took good care of us when our original dining reservation fell through (see below). He was very attentive and understanding of our situation and accommodated our not meeting their dress code.

The bad:
- The temperature in the shower was hard to control, wildly fluctuating from very hot to very cold until finally "settling down" to only mildly fluctuating hot to cold...annoying.
- They charge for internet, RO 4 per day - ~$10...generally I find that penny-pinching and inconsiderate of hotels.
- The king-size bed (NOT comfortable) had a "queen plus"-sized sheet/comforter...the nightly fights for blankets was ANNOYING! I expect hotel beds (especially at pricey hotels) to be beyond comfortable, WITH appropriately sized bedding!
- A few days prior to our arrival, I made a reservation for dinner the night of our arrival at their poolside restaurant. I called the restaurant myself and spoke w/ one of their staff. Of course, we show up at the designated time to find out THE RESTAURANT WAS CLOSED. For some reason I was not told this when I tried to make my reservation.

The ugly:
- The last thing I did prior to departing the room was try to open the safe to get our passports, credit card, valet parking slip...the room key required to access the safe (which we'd already had to replace once) DID NOT WORK!!! Couldn't get into the safe!!! I called the front desk, told them I needed someone to come up quickly and no one showed up for ~20 minutes. I had to call again and explain we were trying to get to the airport for a flight, then I HAD TO GO DOWN TO THE FRONT DESK MYSELF to get someone up there. Their very blasé, indifferent attitude was truly inexcusable. No sense of "we're really sorry about this, let's get it fixed," no sense of urgency...It took 40 minutes to get the damned safe open. We had to rush to the airport, creating a very stressful end to what was otherwise a mostly enjoyable weekend.

All in all, the hotel’s fine and I think worth the stay, but I will NOT stay there again if presented the opportunity. My "poor" rating is based primarily on their poor service...AND the bed being less-than-ideal.

“Fabulous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

We've stayed in many luxury properties throughout the world, and the Grand Hyatt Muscat rates up there near the top. Wow! It is absolutely gorgeous, and the pool area is fantastic. The pool is heated and has one of those circular wave areas where the current pulls you around an island. It also has a nice jacuzzi and close access to the beach for walking or swimming. We definitely did not want to leave at the end of our trip.

Breakfast is great, and everyone who works in the hotel seems super friendly.

The various vendor shops have decent prices on things, and the Hyatt has a stable of taxis ready to whisk you about town on a moments notice.

About the only thing that detracted from the visit was that I was trying to work one day and the internet crashed for virtually the entire day. It was a very inopportune time to crash, but those sorts of things do seem to happen.

I highly recommend this hotel. For a leisurely sit by the pool kind of stay you can't do better. The Barry Bar in the hotel has light music also and is a very nice place to sit and have a drink.

“It went by so quickly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2012

I cannot rate too much since it was in one night and i arrived late and left "sparrows"..there are a few very well themed bars and clubs, the bed was comfortable and clean and everyone is super friendly..for an outstanding lobby and artwork it has to rank high..it reminded me of a museum..there are elevators or lifts everywhere behind hidden corners..and so many passages the younger kids would love it..if you are on muscat for biz, what a pleasure..no problems with the internet..my TV was locked on one station and that was attended to and i spilled my mango juice..but marble everywhere so no mess..
