“A Valentines treat to remember”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 February 2011

I booked a surprise Valentines treat at Clow Beck for my wife after it was recommended by a friend. I must say we were both very impressed by the welcome we received on arrival. We were offered the choice of three rooms and settled on Fleur which was very tastefully decorated to a high standard. Heather was very friendly and we have not had a warmer welcome anywhere. The restaurant was quieter than we would have hoped, but it was a Monday night, so I guess that was only to be expected. The food was of a good standard, but the hilight was definitely the service which was both very attentive and unobtrusive at all times. We met David the chef, who was also very friendly, and clearly willing to accommodate any requests. We had a good nights sleep in our room, and everything worked fine, with plenty of hot water etc. The service at Breakfast was of the same high standard, and overall, there were a number of small touches throughout our short stay that demonstrated a lot of thought had been put into making a lasting impressio. I would therefore recommend Clow Beck unreservedly to anyone looking for something that little bit special. Prices were in line with the level of service we received, so although quite expensive, the value for money overall was excellent.

“A Peaceful Haven in the countryside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2010

Having stayed at Clowbeck on business and pleasure for some 15 years ,on each visit the hospitality is beyond reproach and this coupled with the friendly atmosphere exuded by Heather and David and all staff makes me feel as comfortable as wearing my favourite sweater. Presentation of Breakfast and Dinner is first class ,with superb Menus and the Dining Room is architecturaly magnificent yet cosy and calming .

Would we return Yes .Our next visit is Mid December 2010 which will be our Third this year .Can't wait

“Hotel quality with B&B welcome - an absolute gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

Stayed for just the Saturday night as I was attending a Wedding at nearby Middleton Hall. Clow Beck is situated within lovely landscaped gardens in the countryisde a short taxi (£12) from Darlington station. The welcome from David and Heather was tremendous - both are really enthusiastic and make sure you want for nothing.

My spotless room was a good size with a decent bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and completed with the famous home-made shortbread (delicious). You get a choice of pillows (although those provided were perfect for me) and the room has all the amenities you could ever wish for (including a Ferrero Rocher which didn't last long).

The bed was really comfortable and the quiet location means you are practically guaranteed a decent night's sleep (although over-indulgence at the Wedding would have made this inevitable pretty much anywhere).

The complimentary breakfast (full English) was faultless and served in a lovely converted barn space that serves as the dining room. I then hung around until after midday reading the paper in the lounge before catching the train south - I wondered if I might be ushered out but far from it, I was welcome to stay as long as I needed.

All in all, it is hard to see how this can be bettered without spending a small fortune. Great value.

“Wonderful B&B at a great price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2010

My wife and I wanted to visit Durham and York and after reading Trip Advisor we chose Clow Beck because it was between the two. What a great choice! The rooms are spacious and imaginatively decorated. Our bathroom was pristine and stocked with Penhaligon amenities. The grounds are beautiful gardens (2 acres) which DW spent time touring and discussing with Heather. The food was excellent and the wine list quite good. Most important, David and Heather treat you as if you are a friend. Be careful not to ask for anything you don't want as they will get it for you cheerfully. I want to stress the value received as we moved to another wonderful hotel in the Lake District which was 2 times as expensive.

“Lovely welcome set the standard for a perfect couple of days”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2010

We were attending a wedding at a nearby venue so picked this B&B for its proximity to the event. Happily it turned out to be the perfect choice and I would rate it amongst the best B&Bs we've stayed in, in the UK. From the tea and home-made shortbread on arrival through the quirky ornaments, the comfy room, the friendliness and helpfulness of Heather to the mountains of yummy food at both dinner and breakfast I can't fault this place.
