“Fantastic Hotel - very helpful and friendly manager”

We stayed as 2 families in the cottage. Very homely and clean. Can't beat it with 5 kids running around. Very modern and useable kitchen. Hot showers all around. All the furniture seem new. Mark said that he has done up the cottage just this year. Having our own kitchen meant we could snack all day long and get drinks whenever we needed.

Ate in the hotel restaurant. Very good menu and good sized portion. A few other guests around, but no-one minded the noise generated by our kids. Restaurant very clean and modern. No chintz !

The manager recommended several restaurants and places to go for us. He even called ahead and reserved tables for us. We did have a couple of restaurants in mind, and he correctly suggested that they were a bit 'too grown up' and not children-friendly. (he was right!)

Overall, I loved this hotel. Really clean and functional. Great value-for-money. Very helpful manager and staff.

BTW Yes we could only have a full english breakfast, but it was superb !

“A fry up or nothing for breakfast”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2010

We booked two nights but left after the first. When we first arrived the man assumed we were someone else that he had been speaking to on the phone and even argued with us when we said who we were. The room was comfortable enough but the en-suite was a bit poky. In the night there was a fracas in the garden which went on for over an hour with drunken shouting and swearing. The management failed to control it and should have called the police but didn't. Breakfast was the worst part. The waiter could only manage one thing at a time and it took 10 minutes to take our order whilst the other guests had to sit and wait their turn. There was no menu as they only served only "Full English" or toast. We were told they could not provide continental they get too much wastage. Other guests were complaining that their food was not cooked properly and the chef just argued with them saying that he had put it under the grill for the usual length of time so it must be all OK. He just would not accept that the sausages were not cooked in the middle. As we left, the cleaner was spraying a pile of towels with some clear liquid; I just hope that wasn't in lieu of washing them. You might think we stayed elsewhere if you read the other reviews but I can only speak as I find and won't be giving it a second chance.

“My son had joined me from Canada to celebrate my 80th and it had to be something special - and it was”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

The hotel is an ideal base to enjoy the South Devon area. The accomodation is clean, bright, and very comfortable. The Staff ( especially mine host) treated us like family in the best possible way. The food was extemely good; we had planed to eat out for some evening meals, but we enjoyed the food and company that much that we dined in.

“Lovely restaurant”

Excellent choice of restaurant in Malborough. My husband and I ate in Saints restaurant recently and had a top quality meal, in lovely surroundings, served by a man who knows hows to run a restaurant. We couldn't choose which starter to have so I ordered the Portobello mushroom with goats cheese and my husband the smoked salmon terrine and we shared. Both were beautifully presented, tasted divine and at approx £7 each were good value. We then both followed with the trio of fish which was again beautifully presented and tasted delicious, the vegetables al dente, the fish fresh, and the lime butter delicious. Neither of us could manage a sweet and we didn't have coffee. We would definitely go there again and recommend it highly.

“Enjoyable Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2010

3rd visit to the Lodge Hotel. Mark made us very welcome. Had same room as previous visit (Room 5) usual very high standard. Our key was waiting for us as we were not sure what time we would be booking in having spent the day in Salcome. Booked a 2 night stay, had a reduction for the 2nd night as breakfast not being served on the monday morning, this was not a problem as the local garage / shop only about 4mins walk from hotel selling hot food. We always enjoy our stay at the Lodge and would recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting the area.
