“Don't bother”

I have titled this review "don't bother" as nobody at this establishment seemed bothered whether my wife and I had a pleasant eating experience when we visited. We stayed for a few days in a lovely cottage in the area, and having heard all the fuss about what a great pub and restaurant this was, we were looking forward to dining there. We booked a table beforehand and arrived before our allocated time in order to enjoy a drink before dining. We were met by the most unfriendly welcome by being told that they were short staffed, given two menus and pointed to our table which had the most uncomfortable chairs I have ever sat on. Two minutes later, and I mean two minutes, we were asked if we were ready to order. I had only just read the starters! Ok, we thought, it hadn't got these rave reviews for nothing so let's forget all that and order. How disappointing. The food at best was average and definately not worth the hefty price tag. Three "1st's" happened that evening; a) it is the first time that I have been served a bottle of wine by it being banged on the table with the top still on and the words "there you go". Don't get me wrong, I don't want anyone fussing over me, but take the top off and ask if you want to taste (which I always say no) or if you want it pouring I thought were surely minimal requirements in any restaurant. b) it is the first time that from ordering to leaving, nobody at any time asked if everything was ok. And, c) because the experience was so bad it is the first time that I have not left a tip. A great shame, as it is a lovely pub in a stunning location, but I get the feeling that if you are not a regular, then they couldn't give a monkeys. They have got their unwarranted good reputation, and will live off that. I do not give bad reports about anything usually, but this deserved it unfortunately. Needless to say, we will not be going back.

“Possibly the worst pub ever!!!”

After an 8 mile walk and a series of excellent reviews we were really looking forward to a good dog friendly new years day pub lunch. Despite ringing ahead to book a table we were greeted by a sour faced and surly bunch of bar staff who seemed more interested in ignoring our party of 4 plus dog than selling us a bite to eat or even a drink. We were told in a bored and standoffish manner that they had 'no room for us actually as a party of 16 was due in now and no idea when we could eat, if at all ' when we asked if there was any where we could sit and wait the woman serving said 'not really, we're packed' .

We bought around of orange juices despite our groaning tummies and stood outside in the wet and cold to drink them, all the while pondering the reasons how this place could possibly have such a great reputation!! We will not be going back any time soon and can assure you the miserable bunch of staff did not make our first not-quite-meal out a happy experience at all.

“Disappointed”

We drove across from Norfolk to take elderly parents for a birthday surprise lunch here. So disappointing. The place is lovely, the food well prepared with an interesting menu, but no one seemed to care a jot about us even though I'd sent a couple of emails before hand to explain. The 'welcome' at the bar was minimal, the waitress was just polite and brisk, the chef stuck to the kitchen How odd, no one thought to at least wish my mum a happy birthday. We four sat in the restaurant (on our own) and I felt just a bit sad. Mum is 87.

“Outstanding!!!! 5 Star Service, Stunning”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

This Inn is FANTASTIC!! Situated in a stunning position in Luxborough. Right from the start I was made to feel welcome by a lovely lady called Anita who obviously takes great pleasure in providing a typical warm, friendly and kind but professional service.

James Waller (Landlord) appeared later in the evening and provided us with much humour, lovely personality and has a real flare for making people smile and laugh.

Inside the Inn there are many different rooms which are all cosy and kept traditional, lit candles, warm lighting, fire places, thick rugs and lovely traditional furniture.

The service from all staff was better then I have had in 5* Hotels and nothing was a problem, Fiona was our waitress and she was a ball, nothing was a problem and you could see she took pride in her work.

Tim Sandy (chef) cooked us a meal which was out of this world he was actually extremely HOT which is a rare find for a chef !!

So, if you want a stunning Inn, with matching food and bedrooms then GO, you will not be dissapointed.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

What a wonderful place - the rooms, the staff, the food and the welcome were absolutely excellent, we chaecked in quite early and had coffee, had excellent baquettes made up for our picnic lunch, dinner was out of this world and to top it all I had a kipper for my breakfast.
