We booked to stay here as we were a large group travelling to Wellington for the Rugby World Cup and we could not find anywhere else with enough vacancies to accommodate us. To be fair, they had not hiked the prices up like everywhere else and there are quite a few positives about the place.
The hotel is in Kilbirnie, close to the airport and there is an efficient and free shuttle to and from the airport which operates 24/7. Very handy when ones relatives arrive in the middle of the night! Kilbirnie is not exactly jumping with things to see and do but it is close to Wellington and a taxi is around $17 or there is a shuttle van for $35. There is also a bus stop nearby and a return journey to the CBD is $7. There are also shops, cafes and a supermarket all about 2 minutes walk away.
The reception is warm and inviting and the staff were very friendly and efficient. There is a bar which stays open as long as there are customers and prices are very reasonable (ie not inflated). There is round the clock room service which my mother used and said was satisfactory.
The rooms are large and clean but old fashioned and they could do with a refurbishment. The beds were a little saggy but the bedding was good quality. There was only a bedside table on one side of the bed which was annoying for reading and there were controls for the lights on one side only. The bathroom was nice enough with good towels but the water pressure in the shower was a dribble. In the bedroom there was a fridge, mini bar with reasonable prices, tea and coffee making with biscuits, a flat screen TV and a heater. All of these were fine. I don't know why someone else says there is no wi-fi as there is but it is not free. However the charge is not terrible.
The main problem with this place is the noise. The floors in the corridors are wooden and the walls are thin so you hear everyone else's movements. The hotel is also under the flight path of Wellington airport so if you are a light sleeper, this place is not for you.
I believe that with some investment in refurbishment, this place could be a gem, but it's just not there yet.
