An absolutely great welcome.Arrived without booking with a friend and two children and were made very welcome and comfortable straight away.both rooms were clean comfortable and very good value. The hotel was surrounded by breathtaking views. My children are animal lovers so were very happy when they met the hotel owners dog which was very friendly,as were the staff.Very good food/bar.It was an altogether very pleasant exprience to stay in this home from home family run hotel.Nothing was too much trouble and i would definately recommend anyone to stay here.I will be booking a stay during the summer,my girls have chosen The Loch Leven Hotel for thier school break..Wonderful.!!

Clean and comfortable, family run hotel/pub. Doing their best to offer value for money in very difficult times and balance the books. Looking at some of the negative comments I would suggest that they make a rod for their own back as the photo's on the website make it look idyllic and amazing and the truth is it will always fail to live up to expectations. It's a pub/hotel and although the location is great, don't expect a luxury hotel. I paid £70 for single occupancy in November (their low season) and was satisfied, However, if I had paid £100 plus in the high season and endured noise from the bar as can happen in summer and had a very basic menu I wouldn't be very impressed. Lastly, I really didn't enjoy being greeted by a growling, menacing owner's dog as I stepped into the reception. I'm afraid of dogs and nearly jumped out of my skin. Beware of the dog!

There are several points you have made that I would like to take issue with but first of all thank you for appreciating our cleanliness and comfort and apologies for the room charge. When you booked the room, the girl you spoke to was unsure about single occupancy prices. All these prices have now been worked out and if you check us out on line you will see all the room prices for single occupancy throughout the year.
November is the beginning of the quietest time in a seasonal hotel's calendar and our chef perhaps did reduce our menu too much. We now have a new chef and a new menu which can be seen on our web site.
I really don't understand your comment about the rod, do other hotels take pictures for their web sites on rainy days or do they even smudge the photographs to make it look dull and depressing? Surely a photograph will only tell a lie if it has been enhanced or air brushed. I can assure you all of our pictures are genuine and many are an amateur's attempt, me!
The main thing I object to is your comments about my 'growling and menacing dog'. We are a dog friendly hotel and Kelpie, my dog, is the friendliest animal imaginable. I can only suggest that your apparent fear of animals was clearly on display and that would have been conveyed to her. I would suggest to you that this is a problem that you should really address because if you are in fear of a sweet natured dog like Kelpie, your life must be very difficult indeed.

“Clean and comfortable”

Very nice stay, great views. Dined in the evening and the meal too was good.

Didn't make breakfast as I was far to comfortable in bed!

Fairly typical family run hotel, can see investment has been made but the odd thing where a bit of maintenance could be required.

About 15 mins drive to Fort William.

Thank you for your very positive comments. I do take your point about the maintenance, it is a never ending task. We keep ploughing back every penny we make but we have to make it to spend it! I was looking back at some old photographs of the hotel rooms and they looked unrecognisable. In one room for instance it was only the hook on the back of the door that had remained unaltered and in another it was the curtains but they are on this month's list, I promise!

“The rise and fall.......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

Booked this hotel on a `3 nights for the price of 2` deal that many hotels offer at this time of year.
The hotel is well sign-posted, easy to find and is in a good location for exploring this beautiful part of the world.
We stayed in room 12 (as requested) which was on the ground floor with it`s own private balcony. As previously mentioned in earlier reviews, this room was once an office and, from the way it has been fitted out, I assume this was to comply with regulations for disability access.
There were a few minor niggles which could become more irritable if staying longer. The bathroom sink is tiny, so much so, that the kettle cannot even be filled from it (had to do this via a beaker) and was not very practical when trying to wash or shave. The switches around the bed were partially obscured by the headboard resulting in trapped fingers when trying to operate them. Had to pull the bed away from the wall to resolve this, surely a lower headboard should be fitted here?
The room is handily located between the lobby/reception area and the lounge/dining room. The downside of this is that every noise and loud conversation is heard and I could imagine this being more of a problem in the busier months. Furthermore, the `private` balcony would be anything but that in the summer as it is adjacent to the outside drinking area of the public bar.
Overall though, the room was a reasonable size and warm. The bed was very comfortable and the view, as you would expect, is outstanding.
Breakfast was the usual standard offering, no more, no less, though the service was very good.
The evening meals proved to be the ultimate deciding factor...
For the first two nights the service and quality were very good. The barman/waiter was quick and attentive and the menu, although rather limited, contained dishes that were all home-made and tasted excellent.
On the third night it was like we had walked into a different hotel. I can only assume the regular barman and chef were on a night off going by what we experienced.
On entering the dining room, we were told `only three tables had been set and we haven`t got one ready for you` (not a way to make your guests feel welcome!) Surely the hotel knows who is staying and who has booked dinner and should be prepared for this?
After hastily setting up a table, we sat down and ordered our courses. My wife enjoyed the starter of chicken goujons with yoghurt dip the previous night and ordered the same again. This time they were served with a tub of mayonnaise and both starters were lukewarm, taking 40 mins to arrive. It was a major drop in standards from the previous two nights. My wife (and others) had the haddock the previous night so I ordered this for my main course, a large portion of fresh haddock in a hand made batter, it looked and tasted delicious. What I received that night was nothing more than a processed portion of fish that can be bought from the freezer department of any supermarket. Whilst edible, it was nothing I couldn`t have made myself and certainly not worth the £20 supplement. It was a poor ending to our last night.
Whilst I fully understand that staff need to have a day off, the standard of service and quality of food should not suffer as a result. The experience left us disappointed and spoilt what was turning into a very enjoyable break.
We felt like we had outstayed our welcome. Having booked a `3 for 2` offer, it seemed that by the third night our custom was being `tolerated` rather than valued.
I can only summise, from our experience, that this place is fine for a brief visit. Stay too long and you will outstay your welcome and the cracks will begin to show. Next time the Ballachulish hotel across the bridge may be worth a try......

I do apologise most profusely if you felt that the last night of your short break was marred by my ineptitude. As I pointed out to you on that last evening, you had got the "B Team"! Our Front-of-House, James had his night off and you were left to the tender mercies of Cheryl and me. Cheryl works only one night a week for us and without direction from me, (which she didn't get) she had no way of knowing who was staying and who was expected for dinner that evening.
At this time of year we are very quiet and we try to cope with as few staff as possible. Unfortunately when we do get a sudden influx of guests we are sometimes unprepared. Choosing to have two deals together meant that you were staying three nights for the price of two and having the dinner deal which is normally for only two nights. Certainly we should have organised a better variety of choices for you so you were not forced to choose the same food two nights in a row but I can assure you that the chef on the 2nd and 3rd night were one and the same person and he did not slip away to Fort William and buy a fish from the supermarket.
I certainly take your point about the shortcomings with room 12 and as you have observed you are not the first people to mention the problems that this room has. They are all in hand and will be sorted out as soon as I have enough money to get it done.
Finally I would like to say how sorry I am that you felt that you had worn out your welcome. I must admit that on your final night you both seemed to be unhappy before I had even messed up you dining experience, sometimes it is the attitude of the guest that really directs the end result

The location of this hotel was absolutely perfect. Beautiful scenery day and night!! Perfect for walks along the shore. You couldn't fault the hotel in that aspect at all.

We arrived on a Monday afternoon with our 2 dogs, the woman behind reception wasn't particularly bending over backwards to help, it possibly didn't help one of my dogs snapped at hers, but surely you'd put a smile on your face and bear it. She didn't. I didn't feel welcome at all.

We headed upstairs to our room, I was already aware that they were redecorating some of the rooms as I had smelt the odour of fresh paint on arrival. Some folk like the smell of it, I for one don't particularly like it. At the top of the stairs, inside the door to the landing, there was a man working in the lobby, he had work tools and stuff all over the lobby.

When we got to the room I found it a little bit small, it was a double room (Room 6) but still a little smaller than I would have liked. The view from the window was breathtaking!

The food was outstanding, the cleansliness to the hotel was second to none. The staff wasn't all as nice and friendly as you would expect to see. Myself and my partner struggled to sleep on both nights due to the bed being too soft.

In the evening we spent them at the bar after having dinner in the restaurant, sat beside the burning fire was the perfect was to spend my night. Most other residents - customers came in and said hello or goodnight. The proprietors acted like we weren't even there, they didn't speak at all! I found that quite poor.

I hope this helps for any proposed future trips anyone is planning.

Very incisive of you, yes it was the dogs that did it this trip. In the case of excitable dogs such as yours it would be a good idea to take your dogs for a long walk first then return them to your car then check where you are to be staying and what areas your dogs will be allowed access to. To come into a new place with two dogs straining at the leash, not a good start.
