My wife and I stayed here from 28th to 31st October 2011, second time we've stayed here. Good location, basic but reasonable facilities, pleasant but fairly ineffectual staff.
We were asked to pay upfront for our stay within 30 seconds of arriving, even before seeing our room. We have travelled extensively and stayed in many hotels, b and bs etc and have never been asked to do this before. We were told it was a management decision. This introduced a sour note to the stay as the implication was that we might do a runner without paying.
The hotel itself is okay if you accept that it appears to be run on a shoestring but we were mainly concerned by the behaviour of some guests in a room on the ground floor. We were on the lower ground floor and the people in the room directly above us kept us awake all 3 nights. I'll spare you the details but suffice to say there was a great deal of noise, bumps, bangs, crashes, doors slamming, people coming down the stairs and appearing to go into another room.
We informed the receptionist about this the first morning we were there, remarking that the night receptionist must have seen or heard some of this activity. We also commented that smoking guests congregated on the external steps just outside our room, talking loudly at all hours. We were unable to have a window open as were put off by the sound of phlegmy coughs and smoke drifting into our room. Very unpleasant particularly as the temperature was tropical.
Obviously it is difficult to legislate for the behaviour of other guests but I feel that the managers could perhaps have had a quiet word with these people. We mentioned the noise again to the receptionist when checking out, commenting that the night receptionist must have heard these going ons. He responded by suggesting this member of staff might have been sleeping on the job! He said he would have a word with the people concerned.
Bedroom okay, bathroom grubby, wall tiles could do with a good clean, floor tiles need re-grouting, bath math mouldy and discoloured.
A note pad was provided along with a pencil which was completely blunt. Why bother? The majority of guests don't carry pencil sharpeners around with them.
With a great deal more attention to detail, Shandon House could be a nice place to stay but it seems that staff don't really care.
We wil not be returning to Shandon House.
Room Tip: Avoid room 3 and other rooms on lower ground floor
