“Wonderful Gwydir Castle.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We were treated to an overnight stay in this beautiful castle as an anniversary present from our two son's.
All I can say is what a fantastic place and setting made even better by the service we were given whilst there.
Reading the history on how they brought the castle back to what it is today is a testament to all the hard work involved in making it a memorable place to stay at any time of the year. The only downside if there has to be one were the peacocks sitting on the wall just outside our room giving out their warnings in the early hours of the morning, having said that when staying in such a place and seeing the peacocks in full plumage in the gardens the next morning it was all part and parcel of a very memorable stay.

Room Tip: A room away from the road might be quieter.

“Gwydir Castle is magical”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

We stayed five wonderful days at Gwydir Castle and loved every minute. We stayed there in early December and the weather played just a minor role in our days of sightseeing. Judy and Peter couldn't be more accommodating and helpful. Judy's book, CASTLES IN THE AIR, is a terrifi account of how they somehow managed to restore the castle and bring it to life. Gwydir is a special place on beautiful grounds.. Do day trips to Anglesley Island, Chester, Conwy, and Liverpool. Tell the majestic peacocks at Gwydir, and the ghosts, we said hello

Room Tip: there are only two rooms at this b&b. They are "castle style" as they should be. Bre...

“A fabulous stay in a beautiful Welsh castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

'I would just like to add my voice to the amazingly positive reviews of Gwydir Castle. We were lucky enough to stay recently and it was the highlight of our trip.

If the tick of an old clock and the crackle of a fire sound appealing then this is the place for you. Entering Gwydir is like entering the pages of a novel. We were offered tea by the fire and then shown to our room which was impeccably furnished with lovely antiques and a four-poster bed. Linen sheets, huge bath tubs, turkey-work carpets - it was deeply atmospheric and very comfortable.

We had a sumptuous breakfast, served in a delightful pannelled room, with home-made jam and honey from Judy and Peter's own bees. And then we were encouraged to take a tour of the house which the couple have spent years restoring. Well worth reading Judy Corbett's Castles In The Air to get the full flavour. Our whole stay was a wonderful experience. I cannot recommend it too highly.'

I unfortunately have to differ with the most recent (positive) postings for Gwydir Castle. While we were looking for an "authentic" castle experience in North Wales, we were not expecting what we encountered. My wife had read "Castles in the Air" prior to the trip...I wish I had (I read it while at Gwydir) because it would have given me a better idea of what to expect.

Judy and Peter, in attempting to recreate Gwydir's original atmosphere, have carved out two rooms for B&B purposes (we stayed in the ensuite Kings Room). Yes, the room was spacious, but we found it dingy with ragged furnishings and threadbare rugs. The poster bed, as described in the book, was homemade (crudely) and not very comfortable. The lighting in the bathroom was so dark that I had to shave by feel and my wife could not apply makeup. Also as written in the book, there had been no attempt to remove the cobwebs. All of this, as Judy writes in her book, is according to plan. There were also personal items in the bathroom - a back scrubber, for one - that were not appropriate to be shared from guest to guest.

Judy and Peter are a delightful couple, the location is great, breakfasts were satisfying, and the rest of castle was very intriguing. We respect what Judy and Peter have done in saving Gwydir from ruin, but our feeling upon checkout was that if you are going to charge high-end B&B rates, you need to make the rooms comfortable and accommodating - you can still leave the remainder of the castle in its Middle Ages state without "ruining" Gwydir. Compounding things, my wife was sick for almost our entire stay - the room was not a comforting place to be holed up while fighting a heavy cold. All in all, we couldn't wait to move on to the Lake District, where our B&B greatly exceeded our expectations. As I say in the title, Gwydir Castle probably works for hard-core castle enthusiasts but it wasn't for us.

Room Tip: If you are still thinking of staying ay Gwydir, opt for the Kings Room - the other room has a hallwa...
