When the DH said he was taking us to Raemoir for lunch my first comment was "well, I hope it's better than last time!" He assured me he'd heard good things recently as the hotel is now under new owners. We first came to Raemoir a few years ago to celebrate our overseas wedding with a lunch at home for family and friends (it was wonderful and romantic and very special) and have been back occasionally for events since, however, our last visit was about 3 years ago and it was truly a disappointment, hence my comment to my DH.
My fears were totally unwarranted! A sparkling frosty day brought us to Raemoir in a good mood and the hotel looks lovely in the sun as we came up the drive. First impressions were that the new owners had spent some time and effort in freshening up the entrance and everything seemed so much lighter. We were warmly welcomed and were offered pre-lunch drinks in the bar or drawing room but we chose to go straight to the table. We were there at 1pm and were only the second table in there, but this quickly changed and by 2pm all the tables were full with couples, and families with 3 generations in one case, all enjoying a relaxed Sunday lunch. They had obviously been enjoying pre-lunch drinks! We noticed also a private party having lunch in the room next door. Relaxed it was, as how many other places would not be looking at their watches as guests came trooping in at 2pm for lunch?!
We thought the menu choice for lunch was great and although I am not vegetarian I chose the Galette of roasted vegetables for main course which was delicious and beautifully presented. The DH chose the Roast Beef and he said it was a "good bit of beef" - and I just managed to have a small taste of his yorkshire pudding before it disappeared! Home-made bread and bread rolls - I had a yummy parmesan and walnut breadroll. I was not aware until we arrived that the hotel boasts not just 1 but 3 (and counting I think!) award winning chefs - I can't remember exactly what the awards were but obviously well-deserved. I like to see this as it quite clearly means the owners encourage their team to "go for it" and we, the customer, benefit. Pudding (sticky toffee of course!!) was followed with coffee and tea with petits fours in the drawing room with the sun streaming in and a lovely log fire burning. We could have happily settled in for the afternoon on the comfy chairs reading the papers but home beckoned.
So the DH made a great choice for a "Lovely Sunday Lunch".
