After a nice journey through the partially flooded roads of the Macclesfield Forest, arriving at The Stanley Arms was something of a relief. This is half way between Macclesfield and Buxton, on the edge of the forest. The location is stunning, and the pub can best be described as remote. Walking into the bar area to the scent of an open coal fire was great. We were shown to the barn conversion at the rear of the main pub and taken to The Stanley Room. With a separate sitting room and bedroom it was more like a mini-suite. Very clean, well appointed and with a 'welcome' decanter of sherry, the room was great. The bar in the main pub is well stocked, with Marston's Pedigree, Marston's Bitter and a guest - all of which were well kept. The food is excellent. We were there for a company Christmas meal, and while the others had the traditional Christmas dinner, I had the 'bottom of the oven' lamb to follow my scallops on black pudding. I can't fault the food- excellent quality in generous portions. After a good night's sleep we returned to the bar for breakfast. Before going to bed we were asked what time we would like breakfast rather than being told a time. Sausage, eggs,Bacon, black pudding and mushrooms. Given the location, you can bet the food was fresh and locally sources.
We are already planning a return visit.
