“Entirely charming experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2010

The hotel certainly retains many original features of the building and, I would add, to it's benefit. The staff (a family run concern) were exceptionally calm, friendly and helpful, despite a small problem that had arisen when we arrived. We had rooms overlooking the bay, which were spotless and very comfortable. The breakfast was superb, together with the service and you could eat as much as you wanted. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for one or several nights. In fact, I believe you be hard pushed to find better value for money.

“Dont bother”

We booked this hotel via laterooms for a 2 night break. On arrival the hotel looked quite shabby compared to others in the street. We checked in and the proprieter requested payment straight away, I refused as I said I had'nt even seen the room yet. Going up the stairs to the room the carpet was completly thread bare in places and quite dangerous. When we found our room it faired no better. Handles missing off the chest of drawers (all 3 of them) it needed completley redecorating, Some sort of tape had been stuck around the bath and removed leaving the sticky residue. I did not give the room a closer inspection that was enough for me. I told them that we were not going to stay as the room/whole hotel was in such a state, I was promptly told I would have to pay for the 1st nights accomodation which I refused on the grounds that the room was not upto the advertised standard. When I told them I would report them to trading standards she relented. In my honest opinion I think this hotel is a accident waiting to happen, there were no exits or fire escapes marked.

“A very nice hotel”

St Winifred's looks a bit dated from the outside but the rooms are very clean and have modern bathrooms and satelite TV with many channels. The owners are very friendly and do delicious breakfasts. The location is towards the quieter end of town with lovely views across the estuary towards the Lakeland hills. A very good place to break your journey.

“Give it a very wide berth”

On opening the front door you are greeted with a very strange smell, couldnt really describe it but we overheard another couple complaining about the smell, they actually refused to stay!! The reception area and breakfast room are wood panelled and quite presentable. The lift is an experience in itself (best avoided if you are of a nervous disposition). We were in room 21, i have never seen so many different colours in one place at the same time, the paint work and ceiling were yellow with nicotine, the room felt dirty and the TV was from the dark ages (an old Granada push button on a metal stand with fake walnut top an sides) and only one channel. Great views but thats about all this Hotel has going for it, Ruth Watson aka The Hotel Inspector would have a field day with this one. Its a lovely old building and could be a beautiful hotel. Definately not worth £60 a night and if we had more time would not have checked in and looked elsewhere.
