“Reasonable hotel but overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2011

I booked this last minute in the holidays so I expect you could get it cheaper if you were more organised. We had problems with childcare so a weekend together, ended up with us bring our two young children - we came prepared with ready beds, but they were really accommodating not charging us any extra for the children or for their breakfast. Touches like this make all the difference and they were certainly family friendly.

I was on the look out for the grimy carpets in the reception and breakfast area as everybody had mentioned them, and yes, if you are reading this and you own the hotel - please please get them done. It lets down the whole hotel, not a great impression when in fact, our room was spotless and the bed one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on in a hotel. The whole hotel had obviously had a cheap makeover, so it was a curious mix of being quite tasteful but underneath lay the origins of what must have been an old social club or similar.

Breakfast was a substantial and good value for money, it set us all up for the day.

Staff were wonderfully helpful, though surprisingly unknowledgeable about the area and the nearby coast.

Great location for exploring the area, under an hour to the coast and access to York and the North Yorkshire Moors.

Room Tip: Great base for exploring North Yorks.

“review for Blackboard restaurant - not the hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 March 2011

Obviously trying to be upmarket - but unfortunatly failing. Service was ok, but long wait between main course and being asked if we wanted pudding. Food adequate, but not as good as they think (you just don't serve white sliced bread and butter with fish & chips in this sort of place, and late at that). Cheese board parsimonious. Furnishings ok and toilets spotless, but floor coverings desperatly in need of replacement.

“pity about the location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2010

stayed with friends for pickering war weekend, pity it's a little too far outside pickering for walking to & from. Saying that if you want to use it as a base for touring the area I would recomend staying here. The staff friendly & helpful, rooms very clean. A nice bar area with a real warm welcoming fire & a restaurant serving good food with good portions. The breakfast menu had a good choice, cooked to order & very tasty. Have seen on previous reviews concerns about noise from the road & guests inside but we experienced none of this, maybe the beer helped with our sleep!! Apart from it being a little expensive for it's location we had a great time here.

“In hindsight”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2010

Possibly not what we were expecting....
Booked in for one night. Staff jolly, and welcoming. Hotel a little isolated - about two mile to Pickering, we decided not to walk there since road was rather busy and dark. Taxi about five pounds.
Room adequate. Towel elephant very good.
Adjacent road rather noisy, throughout day and into night. Hotel corridors also noisy.
Next time think we'd pay the extra and stay in Best Western in Pickering, considering breakfast would be included and it's close to the town (i.e. no taxi fare) it only works out a couple of quid dearer. To sum up, it felt more like a motel than an hotel.

“Get rid of the microwave”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2010

This hotel is very clean and the staff are helpful and friendly. The breakfast is also very good with a varied choice but dinner is second class and a lot of microwaving appears to be evident. Our salmon was so overcooked it was "fused" to the plate and had to be sent back and our garlic bread was literally black. This is not what one expects from 4 star accomodation especially when the dining room is far from full - maybe we now know why!
Anyone wishing to stay here should be aware the road noise is considerable.
