“Beware of the uncovered light bulbs in dangerous places”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

We were extremely disappointed with this hotel. The central location caused it to be horribly noisy with people yelling out in the street until very late at night. The overall impression was of tired shabby decor and overpriced rooms and the showering facilities were inadequate. The hospitality tray was poor and left much to be desired. The breakfast buffet looked quite interesting but I did not get chance to try it as none of the dishes were replenished once empty.
But my main cause of concern was the naked light bulb on the half- landing bannister which had no reason to be positioned there. I burned my arm quite badly on this, resulting in three hospital trips once I got home plus a course of antibiotics and a week off work. The proprietor told me it had been uncovererd like that for 23 years, and he clearly did not think it necessary to do anything about it. I can think of better ways to spend £80.

“Very little for a lot of money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2011

This was, for the price, ninety pound a night, overpriced. The couple who ran it where freindly and welcoming but the place itself was very disapointing.
We asked for a double but got two single beds pushed together. The beds themselves where very lumpy. The bathroom itself was ok if a bit cramped. The shower gel was in a bottle rather thgan pouches.
The coffe in the room, unlike every other place we have ever stayed, was in a washed out spice bottle rather than in individual pouches.
At breakfast I asked for scrambled eggs and was astonished to me told that "We dont do scrambled eggs" despite doing bolied, poached and fried, and they where very mean with the toast.
The building itself is next to a very busy roundabout (not there fault I know) and the pub across the road, on a Saturday night, is VERY loud and noisy.
As for Pickering itself...dont bother.
Would I go again ? no way.

“lovely welcoming hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2011

Very warm welcome, offered hot drinks on arrival, good attention to detail: bathrobes, home made cookies, sweets, nice clean bedding, en suit was lovely and large. Breakfast was very enjoyable and had lots of choice. it's on a main road so there is traffic noise but soon got used to it. I highly recommend this hotel and would definately stay again, we had a lovely time there.

“A VERY WELL KEPT SECRET”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2011

I was staying with a relative in Pickering but had booked in to the Hotel for Sunday Lunch. I have rarely had such a Sunday lunch. We were personally greeted on arrival and given a table in the small lounge. We ordered drinks and were able to look at the menu at our leisure. The drinks arrived and our order was taken. The manager within 10 minutes came through and gathered our drink and escorted us into the dining room. The tables were beautifully set with all cutlery complimented by linen table cloths and napkins. The food was served as appropriate and after our desert we were again escorted back in to the lounge to have real coffee and more importantly a large jug of real cream. Complimentary mints were also with the coffee. During our meal the managers wife who from what I was able to tell does all the cooking, came to our table to ask if all was satisfactory - a nice personal touch I felt.
Last but absolutely far from least I must admit that I cannot remember having enjoyed a meal so much. My pate was clearly home made, the meat of the lamb was clearly from a joint that had just been carved and the vegetable were cooked to perfection. There was a bowl of sumptuous gravy and I would be surprised if the mint sauce hadn't been made from mint in the garden on the very morning. From the aspect of the food this has to be one of the areas best kept secrets. Everything was right - even the price !

Room Tip: N/a we were only there for Sunday Lunch

“A very comfortable bed (and a breakfast to match)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2011

Reception warm and friendly. The attention we had throughout was just what we needed - there when necessary and otherwise unobtrusive. Room very comfortable with all we could have wished for. Breakfast could be a blow-out (which we could not have faced) or selections could be made. Pauline was very accommodating to my wife's preferences and I could not resist a heartier breakfast than I would usually eat. No complaints and thanks aplenty!
