We stayed in the family room on the top floor at the front of the hotel.
Finding the car park at the rear was a little tricky as no signage, after a few minutes of going up and down various side roads, we manged to locate the side track which leads down to the car park. We were greeted warmly in the Reception area and the secure entry system was explained to us and about mealtimes etc and we headed up to our room using the lift.
Room was a fair size and the bathroom had a large corner bath with shower, LED t.v. in the room etc. It has to be said that the bedroom decor does differ quite noticeably with the main public areas. The rooms, although clean, were a little tired & dated and could do with a bit of a spruce up, whereas the main areas downstairs were much more modern and felt very different to the bedrooms.
We ate there on our first night and we must say we were very impressed with the standard of food and wine supplied. All freshly cooked and more than ample portions at a very reasonable price. Service was friendly (perhaps a little too informal on occasions) but still no complaints really. Breakfast the next morning was also excellent, with many options available including the expected Full Welsh Breakfast or Welsh Muffins with Poached Eggs and Bacon (delicious!) to Eggs & soldiers or a simple refreshing fruit salad as well as the usual toast, cereal, tea coffee and a wide variety of juices etc.
After being there a couple of days we decided to pop into the bar for lunch and/or drinks only to be told they do not open until 4pm, except Sundays or when the Rugby is showing!! Which we found a little odd for a 3 star hotel. No mention of this on website or when checking in etc. Anyway, not a huge problem as went back into town instead, but unusual. Then that night we were told they were fully booked for dinner (shame not made aware how busy they were going to be) yet when we went to leave for a meal in town later that evening we were surprised to see only a couple of tables occupied, it appears they perhaps only do one sitting each evening leaving many tables empty for hours which could have been occupied otherwise. Another missed opportunity.
We ate there for Sunday Lunch and I have to say it was the best Sunday Lunch we have had out in a long time, with lovely fresh veg, roast beef (slightly overdone for our taste, but never mind) huge homemade Yorkshire Pudding and proper gravy!! All at £7.45 it was a real bargain.
The next night we were very disappointed when we asked for a table at 8.30pm (open until 9.30pm) there was only a table of 4 sat in the restaurant & we could see every other table already set up for breakfast, yet we were told they were not serving anymore in the restaurant and we could only have a bar snack in the bar instead. We were a little annoyed at this as there was an hour of service left and no-one had made us aware the restaurant was closing early. It felt like they just did not want to know or remove breakfast items off tables that had been already set out for the next day.
What we came to notice over the days we were there was that certain staff were working hard to please customers and put a lot of effort into their service, whereas other (younger) staff just gave the impression they didn't really want to be bothered. Such a shame.
Location: very central, good for walking into town & getting to the shops/beach/harbour etc but with that came a LOT of noise at the front from the nearby amusements/main road traffic and Sands Nightclub which had very rowdy customers hanging around until 2-3am on Friday, Saturday & Wednesday. So we would recommend getting a room at the rear, or good earplugs!
The room was serviced everyday, but as we stayed there 6 days we were a little surprised that we did not get at least one change of bed linen in that time, although towels were changed daily. The room was not hoovered in 6 days, and they just gave the bathroom a very quick clean around e.g. sink cleaned but not the glass shelf above it, so it grew quite dirty as the days went on. And on one occasion despite us being very low on toilet roll it was not replaced, so we used some tissue we had instead until the next day.
One other issue whilst we were there. On our last night a couple were arguing/shouting/crying very loudly outside the Hotel until around 4am! We noticed the Police arrive and we were very shocked to see them come into the Hotel with the gentleman from the couple, as they were obviously residents. It then occurred to us that we were not made aware of who to contact in case of emergencies. If there was a fire or trouble we did not know if there was a number we could call or if any staff were nearby or not. A little unusual for a Hotel not to have any night staff/porter nor provide any contact details for an emergency etc.
Overall, I think this Hotel would be fine for a short break, I think our stay of 6 days was perhaps a little too long. Staff were mostly very good, but some really lacked enthusiasm and the service and facilities provided were a little inconsistent, especially the restaurant etc. I think if they updated the soft furnishings in the bedrooms, provided fresh linen every few days, provided lunch facilities in the bar and were more consistent with their approach then this would be a very good Hotel rather than simply average. It is a little more like a B&B rather than what I would expect from a 3 star Hotel, however, for a short break of a night or two, it would be fine.
