(Anne and I had actually visited Scotland in late April, early May of 2002, but the review form didn't go back that far, so I filled it in as '03.)
We always plan our trips 'adhoc', not wanting to be tied down to a certain schedule - we simply do our research about the places we'd like to see, rent a car, and go - stopping at the B&B's on the way towards the day's end - when we came to Stirling, we simply drove through the streets scouting for a likely place to bed down for a few days; after touring Falkirk, we came into Stirling, it was getting late in the afternoon, and since I'm the only driver between the two of us, I was getting very tired, and Anne was coming down with a cold, we really needed to make a good decision expeditiously! And so as it happened, we were driving down Drip Road, where we came upon the Auchyle Guesthouse; it looked so very cosy and inviting, exuding a very friendly charm, we decided to park and check it out - Mandi popped out to greet us so warmly, that we knew without a doubt this was our choice for a few nights!
The accommodations were more than adequate for our tastes, the aroma of lovely Scottish home-cooking wafted through our nostrils, the showers were nice and hot, the rooms afforded much needed rest for the weary travelers - Mandi just doted over us like a mother hen caring for her chicks; not smothering, but just as if we'd been family from childhood. She and Tom were just the welcome we needed after our long day of traveling! At the time, their comforting sitting room whispered a spirited Gaelic "feng shui", adorned with sweet pictures of a traditional Scottish family; conjures thoughts and emotions of one's own growing up experiences...
Their knowledge of the local Stirling area facilitated our goals to see the sights of the Castle, the famous bridge, the William Wallace Monument, and the Bannockburn Battlefield & Museum, with Robert th' Bruce's Monument, which were all spectacular, I especially enjoyed the Bannockburn, with the exhibits of the brutal Medieval battle artifacts - even a few skulls cleaved in half across the nose-bridge and straight down through the cranium! Whoa!
We've kept in contact over the years and do hope to visit again soon; we highly recommend the warmest hearth and home in Stirling, Scotland to ye - tay any weary traveler coming through;you'll stay a day or two more, just for the hospitality, and gain two more friends for life's journey as well!
