“One of the worst hotels I've ever had the displeasure of staying at . . .”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 May 2011

This hotel banks on you only staying one night because there’s no way that you would stay here two nights running.

If I'd not arrived here so late I would have got back into my car and driven to another hotel nearby. Still I chose to stay and I regret that decision 8 weeks later.

I find it hard to understand the positive feedback that this hotel has received. It's a mystery to me how anyone could fail to notice the lack of management, housekeeping and general hospitality.

On arrival I was greeted with below average warmth by a desk clerk who spoke little English. Check is was simple once I'd shown the prepaid certificate.

Up to the room and already I was starting to have my doubts. There were sacks of laundry piled high at the bottom of the stairway. The guest lift was being used by staff to move the dirty laundry. I used the stairs to my room on the first floor.

The website boasts about a multimillion pound spend but again in the room I failed to notice any attention to detail. Where on earth did they spend all this money???

The room was dirty, dusty, mouldy, cobwebs and in a poor level of maintenance. The carpet was soiled and not one that I would walk barefoot on.

In the room there was a foldaway bed which I needed to lift up out of the way in order to move alongside the main bed.

The main bed had a mattress on it that was cheap and nasty. It rolled into the middle. It had no support and the only life in it was probably the bed bugs.

The bathroom was a reasonable size however there was no on demand hot water. Luke warm was the best it could do. There was no water pressure and a shower was next to impossible. We've had stronger leaks in comparison. The fitting were rusty and again dust and dirt was evident.

The car parking is onsite, one of the things that I wanted. I worried about the car for 3 weeks but despite not having a hard top car park the car was in good order and clean’ish compared to the high value merc that was parked under a tree covered in leaves and bird mesh.

The hotel transport was in a transit van. The van has seen better days and had a flat tyre on the day we returned. The transport drops you off at a courtesy bus stop at the terminal but please be aware that these areas are being worked on and there is a good walk plus a steep ramp section to get into the departures area.

My only recommendation is to pay more and sleep better. Anything else is a false economy.

Room Tip: Don't stay here . . .

“Close to Gatwick airport”

We stayed one night taking advantage of the parking package. It was £70 for one night and a weeks parking; which seemed reasonable. The room was ok, but nothing special, fine for one night. The breakfast, however, was extremely poor and we would get something at the airport next time. The hotel provided a shuttle to and from the airport which was prompt. Our car was ready for our return (if a little dirty, as it had been parked under a tree all week) and it had no damage.

“Would use again if flying from Gatwick Airport”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 April 2011

Me and my partner had booked this hotel for one night and 7 days parking before our holiday to Italy. When we arrived at the hotel there was plenty of space at the front of the hotel to park the car before the hotel moved it to secure parking at the rear.

The check-in was simple and hassle free with no issues and the staff seemed friendly enough. It seems as if the hotel was in the process of being rebranded as there were notices throughout the hotel saying that it was in the middle of a full refurbishment following a recent takeover.

The room was simple and comfortable which was nicely decorated which included a flat screen television and tea/coffee making facilities. We did find that the bed was a bit too small for our liking and that the room didn’t seem to block out a lot of noise from neighboring rooms. It wasn’t a major problem for us but it is something bearing in mind if you are staying longer than a night.

We paid for the mini-bus transfer to Gatwick Airport which cost £3 per person which we booked when we checked into the hotel. The transfer in the morning was on time and quick and when we returned to the UK, we phoned the hotel for our return pick up and were collected within 20 minutes. When we got back to the hotel our car was ready for collection.

If you’re looking for a cheap place to stay before your flight from Gatwick Airport and a place to leave your car for a week or two, then you cannot really go wrong with this hotel.

“Pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 April 2011

I had booked this hotel for one night and 4 days parking, before a family trip to Jersey. We arrived at the hotel on saturday - there was plenty of space to park the car at the front of the building (think the cars are moved round to the back of the hotel later). Booking in was easy and quick and we were able to book and pay for the mini bus transfer in the morning (£3 each). We stayed in room no.4, which was on the ground floor, next to the reception.

We had a triple room, with a flat screen tv on the wall, the room was nicely decorated and the bathroom was very clean. The beds were comfortable.

We decided to have a meal and drink in the bar, the food was of a very good standard and the prices where the norm for hotels in Gatwick.

The transfer in the morning was on time and quick.

When we returned on wednesday - we phoned the hotel for our return pick up. We were collected within 15mins (the driver also checked at the North terminal before driving back to the hotel). The car was ready for collection when we arrived.

Have stayed at several Gatwick hotels, and would stay at the Skylane again.
