“Tacky and tired-looking hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

My husband and I booked to stay here for a couple of nights purely because of its proximity to work as we needed to vacate our house whilst building work was taking place.
We weren't expecting anything plush as we did get a deal of £99 for two nights which included breakfast and dinner for one night but we were still disappointed!
After we had checked in, we went for a drink at the bar in the hotel and after waiting 10 mins to be served, we were told to go to the pub next door for a drink as the bar was shut (no signs saying this). We brought the drinks back into the hotel and sat in the lounge but had to clear the table as dirty coffee cups and plates had been left there.
The room itself was clean but very small and very tired looking - the carpet was threadbare and coming away at the edges - very tatty. The bathroom again was clean with plenty of hot water but it was the narrowest bath I have ever seen and if you are anything bigger than average sized, you would have trouble fitting in it!
The rooms are anything but sound proof and the gentleman coughing next door sounded as if he were in our room with us! I was woken at 5am by the creaking floorboards above me and the sound of wardrobe doors being opened and shut.
In conclusion, if you are just wanting somewhere cheap to lay your head for a few hours before departing on holiday from Gatwick then this place is fine. Anything other than that and I would find somewhere else!

I was disappointed to read your response and apologise that you were not served in the lounge bar on the first occasion. To enable me to investigate your comments further I would appreciate if you could let me have more details on the nights your stayed etc.

Since the purchase of the hotel by Menzies considerable investment has been made in the product and this year we will complete our bedroom refurbishment, refurbish the Chequers pub and add a mini gym facility to the hotel.

I look forward to being able to discuss your comments further.

“The missing 14th episode of Fawlty Towers turns up!”

Okay, so it was only an overnight stay prior to jetting off for a few days holiday. Arrived at the hotel, picked up the car parking ticket and ventured into a very cold reception.

Had the forms to sign given to us and the room key and tried to book a table in the restaurant for 7:30. Was told that we couldnt, it would have to be 7:00 or 8:00. Plumped for 8.

We took a drink up to the room and at 7:30 went down for pre dinner drinks only to look at a nearly empty restaurant....We were ushered through at 7:30!

We shared a starter and what seemed like an eternity later our main course arrived. My chicken was an amusing mixture of burnt and ok. My wifes Salmon was so raw it started to eat the vegetables. Eventually a waitress came over, looked at it and agreed it was raw and took it back to the kitchen, leaving mine on the table whilst the salmon was recooked. As looked likely that my chicken was not going to make the journey back as well, I had to eat it whilst my wife sat, stared and dribbled....Immediately I had finished my wifes salmon came back. Impeccable timing as she had to now eat with me looking on.

Once we had completed eating our food relay style we decided to go for a night cap only to be chased by the waitress (Yes she was spanish!) and accuse us of trying to run away without paying. We had given our room number at the restaurant and also for the bottle of wine.

At reception, the night porter (?) said that we had to pay for the meal as we hadnt given a swipe of our credit card and that he had checked in 100 customers and had asked all of them for a swipe. I suggested that his 100 people comment was a little optimistic as he hadnt asked us.

Anyway, the room itself was cold and i wasnt sure if the walls were coffee coloured or just covered in coffee, it was the latter.

Incidentally, as we left the hotel, we were called back into reception to be given the code to the 'security' exit gate. It was up and as no one had left the hotel for some time had to be left up permanently.

The AA should reassess this hotel and bring in a new category-Comedy Gold. My advice to anyone considering this hotel is 'dont bother'

Room Tip: Try a different hotel!

“B & B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

Whilst only an overnight stop in January, the staff particularly the receptionist couldn't have been more helpful.Nothing was too much trouble. Food and service good - a definite stay next time we fly from Gatwick. Thanks to all staff.

Room Tip: Try to have a room with a window that opens as the rooms tend to be quite warm

“Brrrrr I am cold, but I have to pay to be cold”

Booked this hotel as a stop over as I am sure many people do. It was cheap and bearing in mind it was the last Saturday and it snowed all the journey down I was grateful we got there in one piece after a four hour journey and at 1am. It was minus two outside and Snowing when we arrived and the check in was manned, the receptionist took a long time to check us in but seemed pleasant enough. The room was at the end of a ground floor corridor which was fine and warm. We were offered no help with bags which is unusual for a four star hotel. How the aa rated this a four star hotel by the way I do not know and I should know because I am a general manager of a four star hotel! There is some marble in the bathroom perhaps that is what wins them in gatwick? Anyway we opened the door to the room exhausted to say the least to find a freezing cold room, turned on the aircon on max temp and curled up to get a few hours sleep. The sheets were stained the room pretty shabby lots of wood, tv remote did not work, had to pull cable out of the back to turn it off, hoping will warm up soon. No chance. Woke up every hour, ended up wrapping ourselves up in towels as we were so tired we did not want to move to another room. On checking outin the early hours I complained about the cold room but the receptionist said I must have put the air con on the wrong setting! Unbelievable I think I know how to turn on ac even if I don't someone should have done this before I checking in if this is a four star hotel. As a hotel managerial know that the minimum requirements that I need to offer my guests is hot water, heating and clean linen. If we get any of these wrong then it is a full refund and apology minimum! Not even an apology. Come on people get real!

I was disappointed to read you review regarding your recent stay at the Menzies Chequers Hotel. I apologise the night staff did not help you with your luggage and this point will be brought up with the night team. Obviously something had gone wrong with you heating in your room and due the the time our only option would be to move you to another room and the fault being reported to our maintenance team the following day. I have not had a comment card regarding your stay allowing me to personally deal with you points. If you contact me I will be able to discuss your issues.

“Very nice hotel, ideal for the early morning flights from Gatwick.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Great hotel. Stayed there on the 12th January and on our return on 19th January. We had an early morning flight on the 13th so booked this hotel as we were travelling up from Cornwall. The room price included 8 days parking which saved on airport parking. Rooms were very nice and had tea/coffee making facility and trouser press and iron. Very nice en-suite bathroom looks as though it had all recently been renovated. Had a choice of eating in the restaurant or the main pub so decided the pub as was cheaper. On our return we brought my mother-in-laws dog back from Spain so no problem, very pet friendly. There is quite a large carpark at the rear of the hotel where you take a ticket and the barrier opens and you can park anywhere but if you intend leaving your car there while you are on holiday you have to leave your keys with the reception. It does state that your car may be moved while you are away, up do a distance of 12 miles from the hotel which i was a bit concerned about but when we returned our car had not been moved. This may only apply in the very busy months like July & August. Very nice cooked breakfast buffet style which was included in the price of one of our rooms but not the other so had to pay the extra. Taxi to the airport was booked for us and was £6.00 and only about a 5 min drive. Overall a very nice hotel for those silly early morning flights, slightly expensive but if you leave your car there then that compensates for it. Would stay there again if we were ever to fly from Gatwick which is very unlikely, rather stick to our local ones Exeter or Bristol.

Thank you for your review after your recent stay. To put your mind at rest if you book an on-site parking package we do not move your car and leaving the key is incase of any emergencies that my occur.
