This is a standard European airport Marriott – modern, efficient, competent but slightly distant staff because after all, you’re not there to love the place, you’re there to get a good night’s sleep near the airport. And you will. If you plan to go to bed early, ask for a room facing outside, as the rooms facing the atrium can pick up noise from the piano bar on the ground floor.
Like the other hotels on Bath Road just outside the airport, you have to take a “Hotel Hoppa” bus from one of the terminals. You pay £7.00 (about $11) for a roundtrip ticket purchased from a machine at the bus stations outside each of Heathrow’s terminals. To American travelers used to free airport hotel shuttles, that’s a ripoff; others may not feel that way. If you’re arriving or leaving before 6:00 AM, note that the shuttle bus runs only once an hour very early in the morning and plan your return to the airport accordingly.
The Marriott has been there at least 25 years, but it’s been updated and it’s in very good condition. It projects a cool, business-like atmosphere and it has all the accommodations you would expect – wired Internet in the rooms, good working and sleeping space, well-appointed bathrooms. On my most recent stay, the hot water in the shower was highly variable at 4:30 AM, but maybe it was just having trouble waking up. There’s the usual executive lounge for Marriott premium members and the lobby is pleasant, although it can get a bit noisy. Air crews from some of the major airlines stay here. They have a separate check in desk, so when a bunch of them arrive together they don’t clog up the check in process for other guests.
Room Tip: If you plan to go to bed early, ask for a room that doesn't face inward to the atrium.
