The Otter Hotel West Auckland, off road parking, friendly and
efficient staff, a comfortable bed, good food, excellent breakfast,
a good experience and value for money, What more could you
ask for, I would recommend this hotel and certainly stay there again.

This hotel's website is grossly misleading. It promises much but delivers little.
It most certainly is not refurbished, I saw evidence of new? unpainted doors but my room was dreadful. I echo the review made by Redman. Unfortunately we did stay the night as we were visiting friends close by and there was no time to make other arrangements.There is general shabbiness and a poor standard of cleanliness. Dust and cobwebs in all areas. There was mould growing around the windows, loose bathroom floor tiles, very shabby shower, dirty glasses, a well hidden kettle with one broken mug for tea making, thin bedding, no heating when returned to room at 11.00pm. Very dated furnishings. Very noisy...late night guests and loud disturbances from plumbing system ..as reported previously by other guests in 2007!
Externally very grim, dying plants in broken planters, shabby, weedy car park, dirty garden furniture.
Breakfast: Generally very poor quality.
All in all I shouldn't have accepted the £10 refund...they should have paid us to stay there! All this and NO apology whatsoever.
I cannot imagine many folks genuinely being satisfied with this establishment.

Myself and a business colleague booked this hotel as stopover prior to our meetings in Newcastle the following day.
First impressions when arriving was that the building looked run-down and the car park was like a building site.
We checked in and my bedroom (room 12) did not contain a shower!!. The room was dark, musty and in need of a complete refurbishment. There was an inch of dust running around the skirting board and the curtains were different! Basically, the hotel was awful so we immediately checked-out and proceeded to another hotel in the area.
Whoever put the previous positive reviews on this site must be either blind or very easily pleased.
My advice - stay away - it's grim, grim, grim!!

Booked this as a 'stop-over' on our journey from the Midlands to Edinburgh.

This is a newly refurbished hotel and has changed it's name to The Otter.

The new owner is taking great pains to transform this hotel as I imagine it was quite shabby and 'run down' before the refurb.

Overall the service was excellent and the food was wonderful. Lovely tasteful decor and furniture.

Excellent value for money!

I would definitely recommend this hotel.
