“Friendly, comfortable hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2007

A family run hotel that for us has always been comfortable and friendly. They have a small fitness suite downstairs with a gym and also a small swimming pool but a nice jacuzzi pool. Sauna and steam room as well. Nice for a relaxing morning.
Rooms are comfortable and some have been recently modernised to a very good standard.
Breakfasts are very nice and the staff try to make sure that you have the breakfast that you personally like.
Near to the Promenade and to the main shops on Lord Street and so handy.
You can get meals and coffees in the downstairs Leisure area for most of the day.
Perhaps not suitable for disabled people unless you ask for a downstairs room and go around the back to the Leisure entrance to get in and use the lift to the ground floor.

  • Liked — The view of the lovely garden from the room and it was always kept warm on cold days.
  • Disliked — It is an older hotel and the corridors are a bit dark.

“good visit”

After reading some earlier reviews we were a little reluctant to stay, but we got a good deal on a family 'suite' so decided to give it a try. It is within easy walking of Lord St. and the Promenade so well positioned. The rooms were clean and well presented. The only quible was the dated decoration in the upstairs bar . Otherwise get a cheap deal and enjoy.

“Pleasant atmosphere”

We have now stayed twice in this hotel. The staff on each occasion have been most helpful and contribute to the friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
The rooms have been clean and well prepared.
Although the hotel is not new and there are a few creaky floorboards, everything was in good order.
Breakfasts have been delicious and were served with a smile.
The hotel is a five minute walk from Lord St. and as a result doesn't have any problems with noise that we have experienced in some other Southport hotels. It has been a pleasure to stay there especially as all the rooms are non-smoking.

“Unfriendly, Jobsworth, Downmarket”

Well, this is meant to be a 3 Star Best Western.
I cannot deny that we bought our two-night Family Room stay quite cheaply, via a special deal. But perhaps the most telling fact is that instead of staying for the second night, we decided it was better to go home, thereby wasting £75, rather than put up with such a depressing place.

When we arrived after driving 370 miles from Cornwall, the receptionist was on the phone. She waved at us to take a seat. Fifteen minutes later, we were still waiting. When we approached her she had said she would be with us in a couple of minutes! The welcome was non-existent once we did get to speak to her and she seemed to lack any conversational skills whatever, so no apology. Interestingly, the same applied to the different person when we checked out. We we then directed to our room, not shown to it.

The room itself was tired with very poor lighting. The lights themselves sagged on rickety old cheap hinges, and the wallpaper clearly had had masking tape repairs. The bathroom was awful, with a very noisy and tired extractor fan. Perhaps worst in the bathroom was the inability for a male to go to the loo without tilting his head dramatically to avoid the sloping ceiling (this would apply to any size male, not just a tall one). The television remote (needed for picture adjustment) was missing. The other (very old, small and cheap) television in the child's room was broken with the tube only giving a squashed picture. The tea-making milk was off, although within date, and so we made a special trip to the local shop to get some fresh to cheer us up. If there can be a positive within the misery we felt, the beds were actually comfortable.

On leaving, we were asked if there was a particular reason. When pressed, I said that the bathroom was not good, and that I found going to the loo very difficult because it was so cramped.
I expected an focused response, perhaps suggesting they would attend to the problem in future. Not a bit of it, it was simply to complete their records, as it was clear we'd left early.

There was no reply seemingly for at least 30 seconds as she wrote. Then, finally, the stock reply came out, in a detached and very mechanical way: "I am sorry that you were disappointed with your room".

Clearly, not as sorry as we were!

“Crap”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 May 2007

The hotel smelt musty and then we noticed damp patches on the walls and ceiling by our room. The room was in dire need of TLC with faded pictures on the wall and a filthy balcony outside. When it came to going to bed, the room had two outside lights shining in that illuminated the hotel. It never got dark in there! We also noted that the front entrance had a load of steps and could not see any sign of a ramp or disabled access (maybe it was round the back??) Breakfast was basic. It was like a cheap Blackpool B and B except it was in Southport and was supposed to be part of a well known brand. Don't go there!
