“Prince of Wales Hotel with National Holidays from Wakefield”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Room - We were allocated a room on the 3rd floor which was very spacious. Very warm apart from bathroom which was freezing as the window did not shut properly and no radiator. Large bed and plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. Cl;ients on lower floor complaining about noise from 3 parties taking place in building.
Food - okay - good choice at breakfast - limited choice at teatime. Allocated a slot of 5.30pm for evening meal - not happy with that !!
Drinks - 99p bar deal not as good as expected as limited to 7pm to 10pm. Also we had to pay for mixers so 2 x gin and tonics were £4.78 (hotel own brand)
Shopping in Southport - Brilliant - some different shops from the norm
Trips - We went to Bygone Times - great place - loads to look at on the way there.
Travelling - took 3 1/4 hours to get back with all the drop offs and drivers break. A bad end to what we made a good weekend.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room in case there are parties on when you go.

“line dancing weekend”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

the hotel is generally clean, the staff were pleasant and the room we had was warm and spacious. The bathroom was modern with no shortage of hot water. The food was good, the buffet breakfast was excellent with lots of options.
parking was £2 per day not bad as the shops are right outside the hotel.

Room Tip: we were in 205 a twin 0n second floor

“Average 3 star hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Impressive hotel on the outside very victorian but with limited car parking. The only option was to park on the road and pay every two hours until 6pm when it then becomes free. We were in a "deluxe jacuzzi suite" on the lower ground floor. Massive room but I am not sure what was deluxe about it. It smelt damp and had no natural daylight, it made me feel quite depressed. Bathroom was nice and seemed to have been updated. Everything was clean but an overwhelming smell of damp. Evening buffet was good if a little simple. Breakfast buffet was extremely busy as there were lots of coach trips at the hotel. Food was a good quality and staff were working hard to turn tables. Hotel is in a central position within Southport and is a bog standard 3 star. I think they rely on coach trips to fill the place and it seems to work. Probably would not stay there again but adequate for the price.

Room Tip: Definately not a lower ground floor room

“Fabulous Vintage Hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I have read alot of reviews on this hotel and went with an open mind. It is lovely inside, very clean, comfy bed and helpful staff! The hotel is very vintage so if you like mod cons, flat screen TVs and clean lines this place is not for you! The hotel was a bargain £50 for dinner with wine, bed and cracking breakfast! Little negatives the window in our bathroom needed repairing and was a little cold at -4 and the spa bath didnt work but for what we paid we really wern't bothered. Also I feel I should mention it is mainly occupied by a slightly older clientelle my boyfriend (31) and I (25) were the youngest residents but we found this very interesting and nearly stayed in opting for sherry, dominoes and line dancing instead of the bars in town! We loved it and would go again!

Room Tip: Standard double was fine, if you want a spa bath ask for one that works

“Full of Character - Very good stay”

Good Points
The Prince of Wales hotel is well situated in Southport on Lord Street.
The entrance with lounges and open fires were lovely and welcoming.
The restaurant and food was very good for the price we paid. Nicely decorated and carvery food with different meat on each evening, there was also a vegetarian option.
The building is old but full of character and with a lovely ballroom where entertainment is held on an evening.
If you don't want/like entertainment there is nice sitting areas to relax and have a chat and drink.
Nice friendly staff.
Room very clean with newly tiled bathroom.

Negatives
For the price we paid we felt that there was no negatives. We like old buildings so we realise that everything is not perfect however this place was clean and well maintained.

Conclusion
No doubt some would find fault with this place however we had a lovely time and wouldn't hesitate to return. We like it when we see these old buildings full of character being kept open. Thankyou to all the staff for the work they put in. In it's heyday when built we probably couldn't have afforded to stay at a place like this.
