“A Charming Hotel”

We only stayed for one night but wish we'd stayed longer. Decided on a pre-Christmas break before all the usual mahem. Couldn't have picked a better hotel. As we were staying with our 12 year old son we had to be sure there was something there to keep him amused. As soon as we discovered the little swimming pool and the snooker table we knew we were on to a winner. The gardens were lovely and well worth an explore if only we hadn't had such appauling weather. In fact we didn't even make it down to the beach and walk along to Tenby - a good reason to go back in the Summer. Our room was large with a wonderful sea view, enormous comfy beds and a complementary decanter of sherry. Could have done with a little more milk and tea but I'm sure the very affable proprietor would have provided them if we had asked. The dining room was charming, cosy and Christmassy and the dinner was superb with a good variety of dishes. Breakfast was equally as delicious, never tried lava bread? give it a go, it's rather tasty. I can imagine in the summer it would be a lovely place to stay even with smaller children as the conservatory opens onto the garden and there's a little courtyard by the swimming pool. However the dining room would be too formal for little ones, better going into Tenby for tea. We would definately recommend this hotel and look forward to going back one day

“Great Food - Fantastic Location”

Spent a wonderful wedding anniversary break at this jewell of a Hotel, which is privately owned and run. Our room was large and overlooked the sea. The evening meals were excellent and cooked to order with a different menu every night. Only a couple of very minor points, investing in a good coffee machine would be worthwhile and whilst it is a difficult time of year for fresh flowers, I would forget displaying artificial ones. Although there is a visitors book a separate opportunity to provide comments would be more professional. Feedback is a gift.
We would thoroughly recommend this Hotel.

Room Tip: Room 7 has a sea view

“Rooms £145 upwards. Dinner set price £36 per person”

Penally Abbey is a pretty hotel There is a steep garden with sitting areas. Spacious lounge, bar and dining room complemented by a small conservatory. Beach can be reached via footpath over golf course and railway crossing in ten minutes. It is an easy walk into Tenby along the beach.

We took a special offer of £188 dinner bed and breakfast. The room was furnished with old and some antique pieces. The bed was large and comfortable. Towels and toiletries placed on bed. Makings of tea and coffee, decanter with sherry but only one small bottle of spring water between two.

Bathroom large with bidet. No shelf for toiletries (which is why they were on the bed when we arrived) Loo very difficult to flush. Bath with shower over, shower not very good.
-
Dinner. Set price dinner at £36 with good choices. Excellently cooked and presented. Dining room very pretty with good views.

Breakfast. A one hour wait but good choice, including lava bread. Apparently only one person in kitchen even though hotel full.

Hotels like Penally Abbey are charming. They are often historic. They maintain their reputation by price. They have 'ambience' which is, apparently, what you pay for.

We enjoyed our stay at Penally Abbey. It is a pity that some things let it down. A loo that works properly, a shelf in the bathroom, not having to share a bottle of water or having to wait for hours for breakfast isn't too much to ask....is it?

“Beautiful hotel- a great place to escape to”

Beautiful large rooms and large clean bathrooms. What a BEAUTIFUL house and lovely owners. I didn't want to leave! One of the best places I have stayed at. Good breakfasts, and good choice of breakfasts BUT was very disappointed with the service. The waitresses were a little rude, and we had to wait well over an hour for our food every time we ordered. Unfortunately when it did arrive parts were missing or overcooked. It seemed like there was one chef cooking each meal one at a time. This seriously needs to be addressed, as it is half of the service offered in 'bed and breakfast.' However, I'm sure this will be improved, and if I come back to Tenby I will come here :-)

“Excellent Gourmet Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

Very comfortable, nicely furnished and decorated, and very clean Hotel. The highlight of this hotel is the food, starting with probably the best breakfast I have eaten in a hotel for many years. Brilliant choice of cooked to order dishes, clearly using the best ingredients. Bacon, sausage and black pudding all very good. Dinner is equally good with excellent menu, and all beautifully cooked. Our room on the top floor was a bit pokey, but nevertheless comfortable and clean - I understand the top floor is due for refurbishment this winter. Wonderful location just off the beach, in a quiet area. Bar staff was a bit overrun one evening when everybody arrived all at once, and one of the breakfast waitresses might need some more training, but everyone is very friendly and competent. Would definitely stay again.
