After booking to stay at this hotel I read some mixed reviews and some were quite worrying, so I expected the worse, but as soon as we were given our key and shown the way to the lift my worries soon lifted. The hotel is old but it has amazing character, it actually fits in with Ilfracombe perfectly - an old fashioned hotel for an old fashioned resort - I could not fault this hotel at all, and we will be using this hotel again next year if we decide to go back.
The hotels location is excellent, slap bang in the middle of the resort, yes it's up a slight hill but nothing too strenuous.
We had a room with a seaview and the view was great.
The only niggle I had is if I needed to go down outside late at night I had to walk up four floors as the lift is rather old fashioned and noisy so it was best not to use that too late at night so as not to disturb the other guests. But saying that the lift was very cool - like walking into another room. But for the price paid for a weeks stay I couldnt complain.
All in all I would rate this hotel at least 8/10.

We stayed here at the begining of sept, we had booked a double seaview room on a room only basis, upon arrival we could see this was a family room as they had put two single beds in as well, so there wasn't alot of room. The room was next to the lift which is a old type and made alot of noise everytime it was used, and the room was not very clean, skirtings, light switches thick with dust and table had hair on from when we got there on the thursday to when we left on sunday. Although hotel is in a ideal location it is very dated, but we will say the staff were very friendly.

before going to this hotel read trip advisor reveiws and was a bit concerned but didnt need to worry stayed in room 11 (double with sea veiw) was very clean the hotel bit dated but brilliant value for money and location had no complaints and bieing experanced traveller this was the best 2 star place i have ever stayed

On arrival at the hotel we were asked to settle the bill before even seeing the room. Had we seen the room first we would not have stayed there. Yes the view was great but that didn't make up for the tired decor, bed that sank in the middle, dark bathroom and the old musty smell. The windows rattled, the carpets were filthy, over all never again. On the plus side the location is great, view is great and it has parking on site and breakfasts were good. However other hotels in the area were much nicer and far cheaper. It advertises as fully licensed bar, it was never open the whole time we were there and if you really need to get on the net to check mails, expect to sit a while - it is slug slow. If you are thinking of staying here go on websites for cheap rooms, we paid less through them than the hotel would do it for.
