“some nice elements”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

This was nice little place that has lots of potential and they are getting there. There is a lot of effort put in by the owners and the welcome is very friendly and personal. The lounge area is lovely and cosy and the breakfast was lovely and in a very pleasant garden room. The bedroom I had was very small and a little strange in the use of space and mix of furniture. The shower and toilet were not en-suite, which I found most disconcerting in the middle of the night going to the loo and in the morning there was someone working in the corridor which put me off using the shower.

Room Tip: I get the impression they are working on their rooms and there is quite a range. Be clear what you w...

Thank you for your comment and we are happy you enjoyed your stay, well sort of enjoyed it. Our single room with private facilities was booked as you say on your behalf. We always offer an upgrade to a double en-suite room for single occupancy at the time of booking, if the reservation is made on line I always email and offer the upgrade. Most Guests prefer to upgrade but some choose not to, if its reserved for an employee of a company they usually keep the single room. When I took you to the room you were absolutely fine with it and I had no idea you did not like it. If only you had told me you would prefer an en-suite room. When we have the rooms available we would give the Guest a double en-suite room anyway. The furniture in the single room is actually all built in with a pine bedside cabinet next to the double bed, so we do not understand the reference to “mix of furniture”. There has been nobody working in the corridor, perhaps you heard other Guests leaving a nearby room or the Chambermaid going into the nearby room. Obviously when Guests are in the room there would definitely be nobody working in the corridor. I’m sad you left here without a shower but wish you told me on arrival when I was in the room with you.

“Just right”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

We have just had our twentieth wedding anniverary and stayed at the Columba House for two nights. Our stay was excellent in all respects. Hospitallity, room, comfort and food were all excellent. Myra and Bill could not do enough for us, thank you both. Watching the ducks have their breakfast in the beautiful walled garden was highly entertaining. Kingussie is a good base for touring with the Highland Wildlife Park on the doorstep and Aviemore only twenty minutes away. The ruined Ruthven Barracks are similarly close by and well worth a visit. We would have no hesitation recommending Columba House to others and will without doubt, return to this peaceful relaxing hotel again.

“Bit dated but perfectly adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

I had read the reviews after my husband booked and was a bit concerned but I don't think you should be. Thankfully no teddy bear but there were a couple of rubber duckies, which isn't exactly offensive and considering they own lovely real life ducks it seemed themed. But the rooms are a bit dated, lace dollies and old decor and furniture.

But what I was after was a relaxing break and I got that. Big bath was great for the superlong soak I had. I liked that we had our own door from outside and dogs are allowed (at £9 per night).

Breakfast was fine if a little stingy with the toast but no one can fail to like seeing the ducks getting their breakfast.

We didn't get our tea and coffee replenished but that could have been because we didn't leave the room until lunch time so my husband could watch the rugby. Check out seemed a little early at half ten but no biggy.

The overall stay was fine and I although I wouldn't return it's more because Kingussie is overpriced with nothing their - next time I'd go to Aviemore but if your about to stay here and worried about other reviews don't be - the place is fine and the owner has been given a bit of a hard time unfairly for the amount of interaction necessary to stay here!

“Did not live up to expectations”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011

We were really disappointed with our stay at the Columba House Hotel. We had booked as a special treat for a night away and thought we were getting a country house hotel style experience. However whilst the booking process and check in was very efficient, we felt that there were lots of small but important details that we would expect, that were missing. For example the toiletries provided in what was termed the 'Penthouse' suite turned out to be a half used bottle of Palmolive liquid soap and a half used bottle of Imperial Leather 2-in-1 shampoo/shower gel. The glasses provided for water were plastic and the blinds didn't close properly. There was a kitchenette off the main room - but there were no dishes/cutlery or anything other than 2 cups and saucers for making tea/coffee - no wine glasses/water glasses etc. There was a mini-bar that was completely empty so really should have been removed altogether. If you are paying a room rate of £100 per night for a 'Penthouse' experience, then you expect more than a bottle of shower gel from the supermarket that a previous guest has already used. Lacking in any little touches of luxury that you'd expect from a 'romantic break in the penthouse suite' as it is described on the website. Disappointing.

We do not put in the tiny bottles or horrid sachets, of shower gel and soap as they clutter. We buy Imperial Leather 2-in-1 as it is a handier size bottle lots more to use and does not clutter. Same with the Palmolive, much better than a tiny bar of soap. We resent the intimation that these are left from previous Guests. When we service the rooms we make sure there is no evidence at all of previous Guests having used the room. On completing a new bathroom a Guest dropped a glass into the wash hand basin and cracked it, as the room had to be out of service until we could have the wash hand basin replaced we decided to invest in individual wrapped beakers in the bathrooms for Guest convenience. It has been a good system that we do not wish to change especially as the only people to complain about them are complaining about a great deal of other things as well. Not all Guests can operate the blinds but they are really quite simple. We do not stock the Penthouse Suite with dishes or cutlery as this is not a self-catering establishment, so there is no need for dishes or cutlery, and the only cooking facilities here are for the Restaurant. The Penthouse is booked by the same Guests many times over and is a very popular room which has the same modern comforts as the other rooms, and much more….. Some of our rooms have fridges which we have in the rooms for Guests’ convenience if they want to chill anything, quite often they are used to store medication and we do not feel the need to remove them. There is so much space in the rooms with the fridges and they are definitely not in anybody’s way, other Guests have thanked me so much for the facility being there. These people did not book the romantic break which they refer to, they stayed one night and the romantic break is a minimum of 2 nights and has even more added luxuries which trip advisor’s policy prevents me from listing here but is to be found on our website. We are sorry they did not enjoy their visit with us but we will order more corporate type toiletries and try not to buy too many of the domestic type, but can assure you we do not leave Guests toiletries in the rooms.

“Fabulous Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

We had the very good fortune to enjoy this lovely place recently while touring Scotland. Of all the many establishments we stayed in, this was clearly the best.
Myra and Bill are personable and hard working ... very friendly and keen to make your stay enjoyable.
The food was absolutely superb, beautifully fresh and very generous proportions. The rooms are spacious and elegant, consistent with the character of the hotel. Everything was scrupulously clean. Take a walk around the garden - a delight!
The four of us couldn't have been happier. A great stay and brilliant value for money. We'll be back next time.
